Coyote Conversation

After leaving Canada and NY, we made our way up through Lower Michigan into the Upper Penisula (UP). We stopped in Macinac and took pictures of the lighthouse and the bridge onto the UP and then headed up to Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. We saw a ship come through the locks while we were there and it was pretty interesting. The locks are right where the International Bridge provides access to Canada and moves ships between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes via St Mary's River.

I had only seen Lake Michigan on a trip to Chicago once before so I really enjoyed getting a chance to see all of the Great Lakes. They really do look like the ocean, they are so big, but I never did get to touch them or taste the water to see if it was salty at all.

After checking out the locks and getting some taffy and fudge in the cool little downtown, we started to make our way across the penisula for Wisconsin and Minnesota. We camped in Michigan near the border of Wisconsin at this cool federal campground. There was only one other camper and we were right on a little creek that we through fishing lines into after setting up our tent. The mosquitos and horse flies were tough, but it was cool enough that we were able to put on long pants and sleeves to keep most of them away, and then bug repellanted the rest.

During the night, I woke up to this noise that I don't remember ever hearing before. J, who spent some time in rural Minnesota as a kid, knew exactly what it was. I thought it sounded like people off in the distance hooting and hollering but after listening to it for a minute, the sound changed and I realized that it was a pack of coyotes chatting to each other. It was an amazing sound and I am so glad that I was able to experience it.

Michigan and the locs
How interesting! I would love to see the great lakes someday although I will probably stay in a motel rather that fight the insects! Wow, I have never heard coyotes, that will be a sound you will never forget. Thanks for sharing this with all of us!
