For the flyers out there, today was a whole lot like being at Lajes waiting for mx, only I had a bike with me, so we went for a ride in the local area. It was raining, and about 50*, but not too bad (not a day we would have gone for a burger at home). We rode west to highway 77, and then north up that towards Northwest Territory. A very nice road surface, but the tree line was right up to the 8 foot berm that it was built on. Between the rain, the berm, and the constant threat of large wildlife jumping out, it made for a tense ride. The fact that we could not determine if gas would be available in Ft Laird didn’t help so we rode to bingo fuel, and turned around. Dry day, and 3 more gallons of gas, would be a must do ride. After that we rode west on the ALCAN to marker 510KM (317 miles). That is as far west as we made it. Still another 1169 miles to cover at some point.

So, after allot of talking between ourselves, and numerous other sources, we have

as far west as we made it.
made the decision that we won't make it to Alaska this trip. It is a decision that we both regret, but also are realistic enough to know our time limits, and the ramifications if we miss the ferry. It could be days before the entire road is open again, and the rain hasn't stopped yet, so additional washouts are possible. We will be back! Already expressed this to Pam, and she told me we might be able to make it back later this summer. As wonderful as that is, more realistically it’ll be a year or two. But thanks for the support dear! Liz expressed the same to Mike, and he is grateful too.

So we are going to head south tomorrow, and plan on entering the USA around Glacier Nat’l Park. We’ll ride through there, down to Yellowstone, Chief Joseph Highway, Little Big Horn, Devils Tower, Sturgis, Mt Rushmore, and on towards Milwaukee. (Mr. Witt, get something other than Miller in that fridge.) We have extra time now, so once we hit the US, we’ll probably reduce the mileage based on what we want to stop and see.

The trip is a long way from over, and

They still look good filthy!
despite us not reaching AK, has been a great ride. We still made it further than many others will attempt, and are both very confident we’ll be back this way when forces out of our control don’t have the same impact.

Disappointed, yes.

Irritated, a little bit.

Having a great ride, without a doubt!

I will continue to post updates of the ride even though the itinerary has changed.

Mission divert!
Sorry to read the fact that ya'll have to divert your mission. Sounds as though the alternate mission will be a great ride though. No pressure now. Stay safe and enjoy the scenery along the ride. No pressure now.

Sorry
So sorry about those conditions beyond your control. Your alternative plan sounds awfully good and may ease the disappointment a bit.

Catching up with your blog
I'm Mike's kayaking buddy down here in Little Rock. That's a tough break about the road washing out. Tell me how your apparel is working out - any water reaching where you don't want it? What range of temps have you experienced? Staying comfy or just enduring?

Probably the best decision
Damn I'm sorry to read this. After all your hard work planning it is unfortunate that this had to happen. At least it happened where you could adapt to the circumstances. As you know this kind of thing can happen anywhere at any time. Its great that you are still turning it into a damn good trip with that plan.
