Siem Reap River bridgeSiem Reap River bridgeSiem Reap River bridge

This is one of the many bridges crossing the Siem Reap river.
I decided to give the temples a rest for the day and get back to them tomorrow. Mike had asked if it has been cloudy all the time and the answer is, sort of. Most days have been fairly overcast but I consider that a blessing for the most part. It helps to keep the temperatures down and makes the pictures less contrasty. When the sun does come out it mixes with the humidity and makes for some sticky clothing. I spent today wandering around part of the town of Siem Reap. I wandered through the makrkets and down along the river to the Royal residence and gardens. There were a couple of more Buddhist Wats (pagodas) and I enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the small shrines. They are a nice peaceful break from all of the motos and tuk-tuks weaving through the roads and blowing their horns. I have included some photos so that you can get a better feel for what the town is like. Later in the afternoon I wandered back to the old market area and had another massage and then a bite to eat. There is a small street which is appropriately named Pub Street.

There are few traffic signals that I have seen here and traffic just kind of weaves its way around.
It is lined with dozens of small sidewalk restaurants/pubs and is a pretty good deal for food. It's even better for beer at happy hour with draft beers costing $.50 a piece. After a massage, a meal, and several beers I am thoroughly relaxed and ready to get an early night's sleep. I am taking an excursion an hour away from the main temples to see a couple of sites to the northwest. Bantaey Srey is referred to as the citadel of the women and is supposed to have some of the most beautiful carvings in all of Angkor and also to see Kbal Spean, also referred to as the river of 1000 lingas. It has many carvings that were made right in the rocks of the riverbed. I am told that you fallow the river to an area that has beautiful waterfalls. Hopefully the rains have been plentyful enough so that there is sufficient water. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Until then, take care and enjoy the pictures of Siem Reap.

Yes, but do you get free continental breakfast?
Hey Jeff- Very nice cityscapes. Everything looks so clean... Like Baltimore. Looks like the weather is cooperating with you. Your hotel room appears to be very nice, but do you get free continental breakfast? Happy Hour? I thought not.. The pretty flower is a Hymenocallis caroliniana, commonly known as a Spider lily. They are a perennial native to the southern US. I know you must be extremely worried about us back here..Especially since Tom is on leave all week. Fear Not - I have everthing under control. I have made only a few changes to the structure of the Unit... Hardly noticeable. ENJOY!! And Keep the great photos coming. rt
