Here we are in Venice. No matter what you've read about this city, how beautiful it is, how enchanting, how unique...nothing written does it justice. It's like a fairy land, unlike anyplace I've ever been. Definately the place to be for romantics. Any city where most of the transportation and commerce is done by boat is ok with me.
We had a bit of a mix-up when we got here yesterday. There's two railroad stations, the guidebook we had said we had to go to Sant Lucia, unfortuantely we didn't have explicit directions for the hotel, and even though the address given was Venice, it wasn't really IN Venice, not the part in the water anyway..to make a long story short we ending up in Venice, at 10 o'clock at night not knowing where to go without a map, and the tourist office is closed...eventually we figured it out though and got to our hotel...it's 5 mins away from the other station and a 10 minute train ride to the city.
We've got our vaporetti passes.they're like water buses or an aquatic subway system, there's no vechicle traffic whatsoever in the city itself. Everyone walks...you couldn't drive here anyway because the streets are too narrow. Most of them are little more than alleys.
July and August are supposed to be the tourist season, but the place is packed full already. We already saw San Marco's Square and the Acadameia (art museum). This afternoon we're just going to explore.
ANOTHER NOTE ABOUT ITALY: I've never seen so many people with cell phones in my life and the Italians love to talk. Especially older people. You can be on the train or a bus across from 3 old ladies and each of them is on a cell phone talking to someone. Of course every child over the age of 7 has one permanately glued to their ear. They do know how to multi-task. Where else can you see two people on the same bicycle, one standing in back, both talking on cell phones and smoking cigarettes AND eating something at the same time!! It's downright mind boggling.
We have 3 weeks left today...it's gone by so fast and yet I feel I've been away from you all forever.

Note to Gary...you're not leaving any messages....
