Today, was our 2nd day of teaching the students of Business English class 11-1; eleven stands for the year they started college and 1 is the number of their class. I had created a quick outline for today's lesson as we are still getting to know the students and going over the basics.
Quick Lesson for Today: • Explain the Importance of an English Name
• Students type in their English and Pinyin Name (ie.Wang Peng) into Excel
• Take students pictures with their name card
• Review Class Rules
• Students tell us what they want to learn this semester
• Listening & Speaking activity called What Would you do If.....
I had no idea the simple task of steps 1-3 would take over 45 minutes but that was ok as we have 90 minutes in a period.
You may wonder why we have step 1 in the plan for today, but once you hear some of their names you will understand. Pete and I told the students if they want to work with foreigners after graduating college they should have a name that people will take seriously and not laugh at. Again our students are only Freshman but
this college is only 3 years long with their last year being an internship.
English Names before our class discussion: Milk, Version, Vincy, Laughing, Zero, Phantom, Orange, Easy, Bliy (no typo) and Luffy. These names are ladies in the class and agreed after our discussion to change their names. The five guys all had acceptable names including: Wade, Sheldon, Harry, Jim and Leo.
English Names after our class discusion: Rosy, Juliana, Vera, Ashley, Isabella, Paulina, Spring, Autumn, Candy, Billie and Victoria. Much better ladies and now we don't have to make fun of you for your ridiculious names.
Next, on the agenda was taking their photos so we could study their names. I have always been great with names and Pete well, he has never remembered his students names. I said with only 40 students this term we should have no problem getting to know their names. I have to thank fellow Travelblogger and fellow CTLC teacher, Kris Sonsin, for this idea. I told Pete I was going to quiz him on the names so he better study them. I had to take a photo with Spring, Summer and Autumn then added myself with Mrs. Winter at
Spring, Summer, Autumn & Mrs. Winter
We got the 4 seasons covered in this class. the end. The students thought it was hilarious. No, I don't have them call me Mrs. Winter it was just for some laughter.
The last part of class was hilarious as we did an activity I like to call What Would you Do If.... I made 15 index cards with different situations on them. The students had to choose a card out of my hands and then come up with a response in English. To add a level of difficulty, if they got the same card as another student they COULDN'T give the same response, so they had to pay attention. The last part of the activity each student had to create their own sentence..What would you do if.... they could choose if they wanted Pete, myself or another student to respond.
Examples the students came up with: What would you do if.... • you woke up as a man (asked to me)
• you had too many clothes (asked to Pete)
• you could only eat rice nothing else (asked to another student)
• you got fat and ugly (asked to Pete)
• you were taking a shower and had no clothes (asked to me)
Most memorable part
of class was one of the photos in this blog. Sheldon, character on Big Bang Theory show on CBS, was playing with his phone during the 5 minute break and we noticed his phone cover. Check it out!!

Glad I could help!
I have over 200 students and can't imagine not taking their photos with their names. Though, I usually write the names on the chalkboard instead because then I don't need to worry about being able to read their writing! It certainly does make things easier!
