We crossed the border into Belize and passed through Mexican and Belizean customs (interesting!) and it was clear, after boarding the bus, we were in an entirely different culture; no more 1st class buses, reggae blasting from the bus stereo and the people a mix of English, Mexican and Carribean.
The climate is very lush compared with the dryness of Mexico and the houses reminded us of ´The Colour Purple´ and ´Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe´. Most of the houses are on wooden stilts as flooding used to be very common.
We arrive in Belize city and befriend a Norwegian couple who travel with us to a local Chinese restaurant for some apres journey snacks (there are tons of Chinese take-outs here for some reason!). We manage to hitch a ride with the local armed police which was amusing, even though we had a stop-off to check out a domestic incident! (Not too scary then!!) At night the city of Belize is eerily dead and robbery is frequent.

Next morning we rose early to catch a boat to a small island called Caye Caulker. Due to the coloured wooden houses, we felt like we were in toyland here particularly, as everyone travels around via golf buggy´s! We hired some wheels and bombed around the island which took a whole 30 mins!
Aside from travelling around by golf buggy´s, it is also easy to walk days on end here barefoot...the island has such a laidback atmosphere and the people are very friendly.

We were disappointed to find that trips to the Lighthouse Reef/Bluehole were too expensive. We had already found Mexico costly so we had to miss out here. Shame.

Onwards to Guatemala to save some dosh!
