We hit the road for our first solo trip without much sleep. Ed was snarfleing all night and I think we were both a little anxious. Ed went to sleep after 1am and me after 2am. We did okay. The Garmin said the trip should take 5 hours and it took us 6. Lots of steep windy roads and we were often stuck behind double trailer trucks that were crawling along. The Highway climbed over the Sierra Madre mountain range and we where over 6,000 ft. elevation. The views were really incredible, but hard to enjoy because you both have to watch the road every minute. The small towns in Mexico have speed bumps called “Topes”. You encounter Topes as you enter each town, at school crossings and often, for no reason at all. Often they are in the shade. We call these “stealth Topes”. If you hit them carrying any speed at all, they will knock you filling lose, never mind what they do to the contents of your camper. WE spent the entire day going from one small town to the next, after 6 hours of road hazards, you are exhausted mentally and physically by the time you reach
Blake´s Sports Bar
Hey Blake, where are you? your destination. That´s not even factoring in narrow lanes and sharp drop-offs, Mexicans who will pass you at any given time and speed limits that change every 2 minutes.
Our goal was to get to Puerto Vallarta so that Ed could watch the NFL playoffs and so I could try to find a replacement for my computer. The last night in Villa Corona, my HP went up in flames. Okay, not flames, but there was a bright red light and smoke….We went to Costco and Office Depot, only Mexican Computers. Mexican keyboard, Spanish programming and very expensive, plus I would have to pay 13% tax. We gave up, had some great fish tacos and called it a day.
Sunday, time for Football! We spent the entire day at Blake´s Sports Bar. Owned by a Canadian couple, she is the Chef and He manages the Bar. The bckets of Sol beer were 4 for $70 pesos ($5) and their specialty was homemade pasta. I had the pasta Carbonara and it was incredible. We made it all the way almost all the way through both games and finished up at Stan and Marion´s, our Canadian neighbors
in the park, to finish the game. It was loads of fun, almost all Candians, but they enjoyed the games too.
We set out Monday morning with Stan and Marion to find more meds for Ed and a Computer Store they had heard of. The Pharmacia Similar, is a generic pharmacy where we were able to show Ed´s original prescription and get a generic refill for ¼ of the price. Then it was on to the Computer Store. They had several used computers to choose from. I was able to find a unit that worked for me, so we worked out a deal and took a taxi back to camp. Did I mention it was a 2 hour walk through the Barrio? Plus, Ed still wasn´t feeling good. We ran into some Canadian friends of theirs who invited us over for cocktails at sunset. Everyone is so nice.
Ray and Maureen rented a fantastic apartment just outside downtown PV. It was on the third floor with a gigantic outdoor patio. The terrace featured an outdoor kitchen and eating area and the view was breathtaking. Just 2 blocks from the ocean with a 270 degree
view it was very scenic. I just fell in love with their place. What wonderful hosts and we have been so lucky to met such kind people along the way.
