After spending a few days holiday-ing on the beach in Playa, we decided to head south down the Mayan Riviera to Tulum.
This historical site is the most visited of the Maya sites in the Yucatבn partly due to its spectacular Caribbean back-drop and also because until the late 60´s the area was only accessible by boat. Tulum was built around 1200AD. There are three major structures of interest: El Castillo (the tower which dominates the area and is perched on the cliff edge), The Temple of the Frescoes and The Temple of the Descending God. Inscriptions are clearly visible on the ruins.
Also at the Tulum ruins the Papantla Flyers perform a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to the Sun God.

All history aside, we also enjoyed possibly one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen! The sand is like white flour and the sea crystal clear and bright turquoise. We swam in what felt like a giant bathtub! We even attempted some beach volleyball with some locals.

Our evenings were very quiet and relaxing here although one evening we did enjoy an Afro-Fusion band in a local bar. The act consisted of bongoes, a wooden glockenspiel and a female singer with an incredible voice and some CRAZY tribal dance moves.

Last year on holiday we experienced lots of the ruins and cenotes in this area of the Yucatan, including Palenque, Chichen itza and the cenote Dos-Ojos. We are therefore, now ready for a new country and will head to Belize.
