Kate here...

Not much time again, so I'm trying to get all the pictures loaded up. I wish I had more time to comment on the comments, but hopefully we'll be able to do that through the phone in the car.

I'm at the Mojave County Library in Kingman, AZ. Shay is up the street with the dogs at a PetCo, trying to find some paw protection for Emma G. She was tender-footed after our hike yesterday.

Hualapai Mountain Park was a very nice change from the lowland desert camping we've been doing. Elevation in the park ranges from 4500 to 8300 feet or so, and we splurged on a cabin for the two nights of our stay. Delux accomodations included: a double bed, a toilet and shower, a small sink, a refrigerator, a ceiling fan, and power outlets. The cabin was tucked in under some nice shady pines. We did a lot of sleeping and napping, and overslept on the morning we went hiking. Even at the higher elevations with lots of trees it was plenty hot.

With the outlets handy, we indulged in watching movies from bed on Shay's laptop in the evenings (The Producers, Pirates of the Carribean...to get ready to see the sequel...Audrey? Erin? I hope you haven't seen it yet...).

While we were packing up this morning, the dogs started barking like crazy and we turned to see a very large doe elk ambling toward the cabin. Even with the dogs freaking out, she didn't seem to be in a hurry, so I got a few really close shots of her. She's a beauty. Once she'd crossed the road and our neighbors, a large (and loud) Spanish-speaking family from Florida ran to look at her, she trotted away to a safe distance, but still seemed very willing to let them buzz around her as we drove away.

We're off to Joshua Tree today, but we may only stay one night and then head up to the Sequoia National Forest. We'll see.

Talk to you soon!

...and another thing:
when you drive in, use the Hawk Creek way, as the other gate is locked - will pick up a key for you when in town that day. Will also get many avo's, and perhaps some artichokes, if they look any good. Got your message that you're in Bakersfield - call me tonight. Love, Mama/Claire
