Shredded tire
It could have been so much worse! We arrived at Sevilleta (pronounced Sev-ee-eta, no L sound) National Wildlife Refuge today, January 4. We met Jeannine the Visitor Services manager and got our official T-shirts. We start tomorrow at 7:30!!!!!! We haven't seen 7:30 am in a long time. Anyway we are all set up and enjoying the beautiful sunshine and blue skies. If you have a need to mail us something the address is

It did take a while to get here though.
We left Lake Bob on Dec. 28 to continue our trip across Texas. After 2 hours on the road a car pulled up next to us with a woman frantically gesturing that something was wrong with our camper. We slowed down and took the next exit off the highway thinking a compartment door had popped open. NOT - it was a blown tire on the camper. The tire was shredded and the trim around the wheel well was mangled. But we are soooooo lucky sometimes. Where we pulled off was a repair shop!! The handsome young owner changed our tire for the spare and rewired our brake system, which was

also damaged . No Charge!!! Ron gave him $25 and thanked him and we were on our way again.
After going through Dallas we decided to drive the Blue Roads as Richard and Jackie, fellow travelers, like to say, to South Llana State Park in Junction, TX. The park is situated along the Llana River and has 800 turkeys that roost there in the winter. Luckily they are in an area right next to the campsites and not in them. We saw flocks of up to 35 turkeys making their way to the woods every night to roost. Also white tail deer and a spotted deer called an Axus deer were everywhere. The town was a mecca for hunters since there are 45 deer per square mile in the area. Deer processing places were everywhere. See the picture of the deer antler tree below.
January 2, we were on the road again for our final run to Soccoro. We were traveling I-10 and remembering last year when we almost ran out of gas. At that time the truck was new to us and we didn’t really know how fast it could slurp gas. We knew we needed gas
The deer antler tree
In Junction, TX an antler tree in front of a deer processing building. after we passed the city of Fort Stockton but the station we pulled into was charging 70 cents more than the going rate, so we decided to go to the next little town - the only gas station in that place said their delivery had not arrived and they had no gas. We couldn't continue to the next town since we were already running on fumes. So we returned to the price gouger station and paid the price for 10 gallons to get us to the next station….
This year we planned to fill up at Fort Stockton. The sign said there were 6 exits, so we were going to wait for great gas prices before we decided to pull off . Well, there aren’t 6 exits to Fort Stockton unless they are counting both sides. So once again, we had to buy 10 gallons of gas at $3.85 at the greedy station instead of $3.15 farther down the road.
It has been a lot of long driving days to get here but we both felt we had good company and conversation to pass the time. Dave misses his small camper for these long hauls. We take him in
Llano River
Llano State Park. In warm weather this place is busy with kayakers and tubers. Water levels are pretty low now because of the draught. the truck with us now. When we left him in the camper we'd find him sitting in the bathroom wastebasket to hide. As we would get the camper ready to hit the road he'd get in the basket even before we finished securing everything. It just broke our hearts to think of him back there in this little wastebasket all alone. So now he and his litter box have the backseat of the truck all to themselves.
