Times Square
Di in Times Square We said goodbye to the West Coast & California, and jumped on a plane headed for the East Coast - New York New York!!
We stayed in the middle of Times Square at the big apple hostel, and it was a fantastic location, even if it was difficult to sleep at night because of the noise and the famous neon lights (thanks for the earplugs James, they definately came in handy that week!).
We share a dorm with two other Aussies - Sydneyites. Our first outing is to Central Park. The place is huge & we get totally lost. We end up doing a full circle & find ourselves at our starting point. We thought that we had mastered the subway system until we got on the wrong train 3 times - bloody express trains.....
One night we go to a Comedy Improv show, it is hilarious. The comedians take the piss out of everyone, luckily we fly under the radar. A few of the guys have been on Comedy Central. It is memorial day & the american sailors are in town. They cop it the most without realising. We meet an Aussie girl & her South African
NY home
Our home for 5 days in NY boyfriend & follow them to a jazz club afterwards. It is great & we might meet up with them in London...
Check out the Statue of Liberty from the free ferry as we are too scabby to pay for a proper tour. Managed to get some photos though. Afterwards we check out ground zero. It is hard to visualise the massiveness of the site until you go there. A memorial has been set up & work has begun on the foundations for the new tower.
After plenty of crap meals we stumble upon a place called Maui Taco. Any good food is out of our price range so we settle for something cheap that always ends up being shyte. This is not the case at Maui Taco. They have great meals that fill you up for a very reasonable price & their drinks are the cheapest in town. I enjoy the Caronas while Di gets into the Marguritas. The bar tender looks after her & they are super strong.
We check out the empire state building by night. It was packed & we had to wait in lines for many hours - even to get out of
the place ! The veiws were good but you had to fight passed people to get a sopt on the railing. Overall it was pretty pricey but something that had to be done.
We catch the subway to Coney Island. Finally some beach.....but the weather turns bad ! It is perfect conditions in the city but we have to wear jumpers at the beach !! There are some people swimming but we aren't that desperate. We go to a theme park that resembles the one out of the movie "Big". After a short ferris wheel ride we decide to leave.
We are pretty keen to see a baseball game while in NY but find out that the yankees are on the road. The alternative is the Mets. We go to their head office in search of some info. The guy behind the desk is reluctantly helpful but tells us that the third game would be the one to go to. They have 3 games againt the Arizona Diamondbacks & the Mets main pitcher is set to plan in game 3. We discuss ticket prices & decide that the $5 bleecher ticket is the one for us.....they couldn't be
Statue of Liberty
View from the Statten Island Ferry that bad, could they !!
We arrive at the staduim & it looks pretty cool...& our seats are even cooler.....the last row of seats in the stadium with the wind howling through us. We have a better veiw of the car park then the field. We get caught up in the atmosphere & buy hot dogs & those large pretzels. Everything is super expensive but the 40,000 strong crowd can't get enough (not bad for a Wed night). There is a cue for everything. The game goes along at a slow pace & after turning blue we decide to look for new seats. We sneak into are more expensive area & it is tops.
A few hours pass & there is still no score but the annoucer does his best to keep the crowd entertained. They have a lot of crowd involvement which is very necessary during a boring game. The ninth inning passes & it is still 0-0. An american beside me explains that we could be here all night waiting for a result. Di is stoked !!! We hang out for another hour & are rewarded in the bottom of the 13th when the Mets finally
Ground Zero
World Trade Centre Site score....(yay, we can go home!!!) The crowd goes into an unexpected frenzy. Everyone is high fiving & there is a lot of back slapping going on. They even sing all the way out of the stadium....
An email from Boggy pre-empts our next event. Pete Murray is in town & we go along to give him some support. Not that we had to though....the place was chockers. He only played for a short time but he got in all his best songs....I did my best to impersonate him & closed my eyes for effect. Half the place was full of Aussies & the other half yanks....including none other than Lambo.... Boggy had given him the same tip off & we stumbled into eachother at the bar.
Our 5 nights flew by & we had a ball but can't wait to start our European adventure !
