Great workmen
The hard working and exceedingly pleasant workers Robby, Ryan and Todd were great to interact with. They did a great job on Tsamaya. Just another confirmation of how nice the people of Trinidad are to deal with. It is Wednesday, October 12th and we are back in the water as of Monday, Hooray! What a great feeling it is. It is hard to believe that we have been back in Trinidad for a couple of weeks already (time flies when you’re having fun). We had work done on the boat while we were away in the U.S.A. but most of the work was not complete. That was not a bad thing as we were here to see some of the work being done and get to know the workmen. We were fortunate to be able stay in an apartment at the boatyard while waiting for the work to be completed. We were only going to stay for a day or two, but found out that it was open for the time we had to wait so decided to bite the bullet and pay the extra for the comfort of being in an air conditioned apartment (daytime temperatures are high 90s with the humidity in the high 90s also). Typically most people live “on the hard” when working on their boats, but with having workmen needing access to the boat, and painting etc it was easier for all involved
What an Operator
Michael is an amazing driver of the travel lift. We have seen him moving boats around the yard with many close quarters and he never hits anything. He truly is a talented operator. to not have us living on board. At times I felt that we were “cheating” by not living on board missing out on the hardship of climbing up and down ladders with all your groceries, going to the washrooms, washing dishes in a basin (you don’t want the water to drain under the boat), using an ice box instead of a working refrigerator. Well, don’t worry, we got over missing out on all that fun and enjoyed the apartment.
We did get quite a bit of work done on the boat during the day despite the heat. Bob installed a new thru-hull, re-wired the wind generator, put a new impeller in the engine etc.; Janice inventoried the whole boat down the last can of tuna and we both spent time working with the various contractors. We did have some time for fun as well. We took a full day tour on the “taste of Trini” (you’ll learn about this in a separate blog entry) and we are looking forward this weekend for an overnight trip to Asa Wright Nature Reserve. One of the main reasons for being out here is to travel and explore so we are doing it!
We
Crabs or Sugar Cane Anyone?
Anyone interested in either raw sugar cane or how about some live crabs? You can find this and more at the markets in Trinidad. had originally been told that we could launch Tsamaya a week ago Monday so we scheduled the launch for Thursday just to give some extra time for reality. It got to be Wednesday and work was still being completed so we rescheduled for Friday, but then gave ourselves some extra time to get the boat sorted out, filters changed, water tanks filled and a few other odds and ends that we wanted to do. Columbus Day, Monday, October 10th we were a go to launch. Thanks to the superb work done by Power Boats it was a painless process and everything went smoothly. If you’re ever down Trini way Power Boats is the place to get work done. Great people, helpful courteous and committed to doing a first-rate job. Camille, the person in the office is efficient and lovely, Rico the project manager we worked with was knowledgeable and helpful. Garth ( contractor who did our gel coat) and David (who did our canvas work) are both artists and we are very pleased with the quality of their work. Of course now we have to get used to living on a white boat rather than a blue boat. She is easier
Buying Live Crabs
Here is a close up of the bundles of crabs that you can buy at the market. to see in the dark as we found out the other night when coming back from shore. There are pluses to this change already!
The feeling of being back on the boat full time is hard to describe. Don’t get us wrong, we like our creature comforts at times, but there is just something comforting about being back on the water in your own home. Yes, this is our home. When we came back to the boat after returning from the US it seemed to have gotten smaller, but now that we are back onboard, Tsamaya is comfortable and home. Saving rain water while we are at anchor to wash dishes and the deck (we will not make water in the anchorage as it is too dirty) are some of the many pleasures of being back on board. We are getting our walks in by going the bank, buying supplies and grocery shopping.
One of the fun parts of cruising is getting to know others that are living the same lifestyle. We are meeting people from all over the world – Scotland, England, Germany, France, Sweden, South Africa and numerous others. We are learning so much and realize how much
Bodi Beans
We bought bodi beans at the market and cooked them like regular green beans. We are amazed at how long they are. We just found out how to make them as a curry so will try those next time. of a beginner we are – most of these people have crossed the Atlantic, explored South America, the Baltic, the Caribbean and numerous other areas. We have just begun. The hard part now is deciding where to go next. Every day we seem to have a new plan. We have a few weeks before we leave, waiting for the “official” hurricane season to be over before we move away from Trinidad. We are enjoying it here and will take advantage of the time to explore this magnificent island country and her people.
