Kas and Kastellorizon.
Kas is an OK town with a harbour and a brand new marina. The marina have had a few offers on the summer to attract business, the best of which is pay for one night and stay for 7! So we did. So we relaxed by the pool, cycled into town and generally hung out. Local paragliders launch from the nearby hills and land by the harbour, or as we realised one day, right into the marina.
Our Turkish visa lasts 90 days so to renew it we had to leave the country and then return. We managed this with just 2 days to spare by taking the ferry to the Greek island of Kastellorizon just 4 miles of the Turkish coast. We went there last year and it is a tiny Greek outpost 100 miles from any other Greek island. Everything is centred around the small harbour and there is very little to do so our 5 hours there was focussed on coffee, then lunch, then an afternoon beer, all punctuated by another walk around the harbour. Last stop was duty free – spirits are half the price in Greece compared to Turkey. The highlight
of the whole day was having a dolphin come to play off the bow of the ferry as we crossed back to Kas.
Cavus Limani – Turtles and squid.
While at anchor in this relatively open bay, we spotted a little turtle head bobbing up to breathe every now and then. As it was close, we popped into the water to have a look. The turtle saw us coming and swam off, but another was on the bottom munching away at something. We didn't seem to bother it. We watched for ages and then the little chap came up to breathe. We all swam around for a while then he went back to the bottom for a bit more of whatever it is he likes. Next time he came up we got a bit close and he swam off, but not before we got a few photos and a video.
Back at the boat there was a flotilla of squid hanging around and keeping an eye on us. Then we spotted one (we think it was a squid) which, although only a few inches long, had something of the sea-monster about it – see what you think.
Ancient Phaselis.
Established in 690BC, for almost a thousand years Phaselis was a prosperous trading city. We anchored in one of its 3 harbours and explored the Roman ruins of the city, its aqueduct, theatre and baths – fascinating.
Antalya.
So we are now in the marina in Antalya. We have been here 3 days and it has rained pretty much non-stop. Last night we had a thunder and lightning storm with winds of 50 miles an hour and tonight the same thing is just starting. So after almost 4 months of sunshine, we get this.
Anyway, jobs are getting done, Freedom will be lifted out of the water on Wednesday and we head home on Thursday night. I say night but it will be a 1am taxi, 3.30am flight, 5.30am arrival and 7am train – then maybe 9am bed!
