In the red square in central Moscow....cool huh!!
Well folks, we did survive Russia and have now emerged to the other side, residing safely in Poland. Now, before we tell you about Poland (will save that for tomorrow, as we really only just got here) I'll finish telling you about our last days in the mother country, Russia.
On Friday (think it was friday, really no idea what day it is) we both experienced a 'first' in our lifetimes, which is what travel is all about, experiencing something new.
Anyway, our first 'new experience' was getting to see an 'occupied' body bag on the side of the road....absolutely lovely! In Russia I dont think there is such a thing as the ses, and clearing the road first, calling an ambulance or any of that. Its basically just pull the bodies out, whack em in a bag and you're good to go to the next car accident, likely to be only a couple of kms down the road.
Okay, moving on....our next first experience (so mick tells me) is we arrived at our little dodgy hotel for our last night in russia, a town nobody has ever heard of that was pretty much half way between the russia and belarus

border. Anyway, the hotel had ever so nicely prepared some 'surprise' entertainment for us during dinner, so we wouldnt be bored. Turns out the entertainment was a skanky russian stripper, who was missing half her arm assumingly due to being shot at some stage...that washed our meal (whatever the hell that meat was) down well....very appropriate we thought, considering our contiki tour is made up of more women than men, and some religious folk, it was obviously enjoyed by all!
Anyway, more about Russia, the horror stories that filled our heads were just that, stories...none of which (praise the Lord) came true to any on this tour. Apart from the psycho gypsys that chased us within about 5 minutes of arriving in the city, and one guy having his watch taken as he forgot to pay for his pool table usage, there was really nothing else to report back. It is a beautiful country, and I'm sure in 50 years time it will be the new tourist hot spot, its just going through its changes, but its all good. St Petersburg I would definitely return to, but I could probably do without Moscow. Although with all the metal detectors at

Me again, posing in the Red Square. Most of the pics are of me, cos Mick wouldnt let me hold the camera cos I'd apparently get mugged.
the entrance to each building (even maccas had metal detectors) it really could be considered quite safe?!?!?!?
But I will say one thing, it really encourages you to take an interest in world history, because what that city has survived is unbelievable and something we from the lucky country will hopefully never ever have to experience. We will hopefully be history (trivia) buffs by the time we return.
Last night we arrived in Poland to the most luxurious hotel of all the trip. When walking in to our rooms you could here every contikian shout, woohoo, it doesnt stink!! And, the toilets are clean (dont even get me started on those darn russian squat toilets, you can safely class me as a bit of a 'princess' when it comes to toilets...its amazing how long I can hold, if its a choice between squatting or a real toilet back at the hotel...anyway too much info)
we dont need to wear shoes in the showers here, and the beds are real beds...ahhh bliss!
And....we even got to eat a reckonised meal last night, the meat was easily identifiable as pork with vegetables.....and no damn Dill herbs....what a night!
We're in Poland for

the whole day today, then off to Berlin tomorrow just in time for some world cup madness (pretty confident mick is going to try and pull some kind of stunt that will allow him to stay in germany for just a few more days...or soccer matches) so til then folks!
