our last night in bangkok with mike and christine
I just wanted to inform everybody that i have fallen in love......with the city of chang mai (haha, dad i know your heart just dropped there...take a few deep breaths). after the loud/sweltering/crowded/ smelly streets of Bangkok, this city is a haven. it's so laid back, and the perfect temperature all the time, it's great!!!

So i last left you in Bangkok. on our last night there we met up with some fellow canucks. there was mike from vancouver and christine from halifax. they had been travelling seperatly in new zealand and met on the plane to bangkok. after they had had a few days in bangkok they decided to exit the city and join us to chang mai. we left bangkok on a night bus, we've been told to take the trains, but because of floods the tracks have been washed out. the bus took 12 hours to get here. it was a "VIP" bus that was pretty squished...i wonder what the normal one would have looked like. it was soon thereafter that kristen and i finally realized that the majority of our time travelling is going to be on planes, trains and automobiles!!!

once we got here we booked our 2 day jungle. mike decided to go to the city of pai and christine joined us. don't worry though, we picked up another stray, alex from england. the four of us went on the jungle trek that was amazing. we went and saw waterfalls, then trekked into the mountains and stayed the night at a hill tribe village. we slept in bamboo huts during a thunderstorm. nobody can ever say i don't know how to rough it now!!! the next day on the trek we went to an elephant camp and rode them down the river. after a few hours we switched to a bamboo raft. the whole experience was amazing, but very dirty, i wish i had a loofah (sorry inside joke...i had certain unnamed friends that hassled me and called me a princess because i wanted to bring a loofah along)!!!

well we are leaving for laos tommorrow, it going to take two days by boat. maybe i should add planes, trains, automobiles and boats. christine has left us to volunteer at a local school, but alex has decided to tag along. take care everyone. oh and congatulations laurie on the birth of carter

loofahs!
Me and Stu both bought dishwashing sponges in Pak Beng (the overnight stop on the slow boat ride) and used them as "loofahs" for the rest of the trip. Worked great.

awesome
thanks for the great pictures and updates. Did you try the roadside Phat Thai in Bangkok? The only way to beat the heat is Mekong and tonic on ice from 1-3 pm everyday! Enjoy.

Memories
It sounds like you are doing the reverse of my travel 3 years ago!!The memory rushes are great. I really did enjoy the energy of KohSan Road BUT I also enjoyed the pool at my Guest House. The night market in ChiangMai was a favourite and it is really easy to mail things home from there.Walking in old town was also a treat. You will love Luang Prabang and I recommend the Canadian bakery and it's cinnamon buns...the night market also serves up some great food at a VERY reasonable cost.
