I could get used to this...
We have been having an absolutely smashing time! Laos is for sure, hands down, no doubt about it, my favorite Asian country so far.

After staying in Vientiane for a few days we decided we would trek around Northern Laos. We caught a 4 hour bus ride to Vang Vieng. This little town was SMASHING. It was so laid back, beautiful and full of activities.

We ended up hooking up with 2 Aussies in Vientiane and they were having so much fun with the Biggin posse they decided to come with us, despite already being there a few weeks earlier.

We had a KILLER TIME tubing down the Mekong river. It ended up being an all day event. We thought we should have a team look and decorated our conical hats with beer labels, stickers, plants and flowers before we took to the water. The locals really got a kick out of our getup 😊

There are bars on route along the waters edge. If you want to stop you just yell to the bamboo stick guys and they reach out with...you guessed it....a bamboo stick to pull you in. You just dock your tube, sit on one of the decks overlooking the river, and drink to your hearts content. They have diving boards, swings and rope swings that make for a great river playground. You have the choice to be a rope swinger, or join the crowd of people cheering them on. It was an absolutely awesome day. We took a disposible underwater camera so sorry, no pics!

It was one of the Aussies birthday (Jason) and we decided to throw him a party. We went to a restaurant a few houses down from our guest house and asked them if we could throw Jason a birthday party. They got excited and started yelling "party, party". We laughed and said we would be back at 7. Later that night we went back and it was the most amazing thing. All the ladies from the restaurant decorated the entire place with balloons and flashing lights. They had music playing and their entire family was there waiting for us. It was the sweetest thing. It was obvious they put a lot of time into it. So we pulled up a bunch of tables and bought the entire family as well as our crew supper. We let the

family do all the ordering so we could have a real Lao meal. It was one of the best times Ive had in a foreign country. They taught us songs and Lao phrases and the best part was when "papa" (the owners Grandfather) brought out these little white strings. He put lucky money in the palm of Jasons hand and put his beer on top of the money. Then, he said a blessing to Jason in Lao, tied a white string around his wrist, and Jason followed by downing his beer. Everyone took turns blessing each other around the table and we all had a fair number of strings tied around our wrists by the end of the night. The worst part was when "papa" (the owners Grandfather) and I had a chilli pepper eating contest. That man must have a steel digestive system😞 He gave me a whoopin ill never forget😊

After a few days recovery we decided Vang Vieng was the devil (as well as beerlao) and we should switch locations. Our next stop was Luang Prabang. Tenneal stayed with the boys an extra day so I hopped on a 6 hour bus ride and arrived a

Well My fingers are numb now so Ill post more later!

Sa bai dee!
Hello Avril! You likely won't remember me...I was at Bushwakker for your going-away party put on by your work-gang before you left Regina; I was with Mike A. He shared your blog address with me and I have so enjoyed following your trip stories. I have been planning a trip to Asia for November '06 which started out as just Thailand but now am sold on going to Vietnam and Laos, and maybe Cambodia and Malaysia. Your story about the special family in Laos that put on the big party for you and your friends made my heart smile. Thankyou for your animated and entertaining journalling. This blog thing is a super way of sharing ones travels with other wanna-be travellers. Keep up the great stories!!!! I hope I can connect with you sometime on your return home to get some tips on where you stayed, ins/outs, etc. I'll e-mail you again in the future. Thankyou Avril! Pamela Bjelland
