We arrived in Danang bright and early following a short however turbulent flight. Other than a sticky substance covering Gali's backpack (we were compensated 10$ to go and clean it) things were all good and we were ready to tackle another Vietnamese town. We boarded our hotel transport, which drove us 30 minutes to Hoi An - the town of tailors. After checking into the 4 star Hoi An Pacific Hotel we jumped onto the complimentary hotel bicycles, which were our main mode of transportation for our 3 day 2 night Hoi An stay. Ideally located, our hotel is right in the middle of the beach and old town, about a 2.5 km bikeride either way.
First stop, laundry drop-off (Thank you Vietnam airlines for sponsoring all our laundry cleaning this whole trip - the $10 compensation will take us far) then breakfast and tailor shop. We checked out two tailors before settling on the second one - Au A Tailors. Were we satisfied? Yes... but we don't think we would employ the same tailor a second time around as her attitude was not the sweetest. After 2.5 days and four fittings Seth walked away with a 3-piece suit and
shirt and following two fittings Gali had herself a pair of white linen pants. The experience although stressful at times was interesting... Buying off the rack is definitely less of a headache. Other than the unique clothing / tailor experience we spent two great afternoons at the beach, which was beautiful. The water was not the prettiest blue, but the sand was so soft and jellyfish / seaweed free. Both evenings in Hoi An we headed to the oldtown where the nightlife was buzzing, restaurant selections were delicious and the river which cuts through the oldtown is all lit up with floating dragon, fish and other types of colorful paper sculptures. As well, there are ladies lining the river selling candles, these are bought and then placed in the river as a sacrifice to the gods.
Our first night we ate traditional Hoi An cuisine and the second night we opted for pizza, vino and limoncello, Mmmm.
We checked out the oldtown one morning and scoped out the old homes, which are under conservation orders, browsed the souvenirs, purchased a painting and leather sandals and biked through some local streets to get a feel for the local life.
We left Hoi An Thursday afternoon and spent the morning having one last fitting in the tailor shop, purchasing a few more books as we needed more reading material and relaxing by the lush pool surroundings of our hotel. We then boarded our $3 per person coach bus trip to Hue, Buhbye beach...
