The past 15 months that Homyar and I have been in the U.S. have been one amazing ride! Every few months I ask him to describe the best experience he's had so far. As of last weekend, our whitewater rafting trip took first place by leaps and bounds over the rest. Catapulting to the head of the line deserves a blog post 😊

My brother and sister-in-law joined us for what was sure to be a fabulous weekend trip. Soaking up the sun in the Central Valley was the best way to combat the dreary weather we've been having in San Francisco. We drove 3 hours north-east past Sacramento to the little town of Coloma and found our resting place for the night. Our camp site was nestled among the trees just steps away from the American River. A little history lesson: this was the site where gold was first discovered in 1848, which led to the California Gold Rush and eventually played a pivotal role in California becoming part of the United States. We popped open our tent, had a delicious BBQ, and settled in for a good night's rest under the open skies.

This was my first whitewater rafting trip so I had no idea what was in store for us. We scurried about the next morning (trying to cook eggs on the grill ... good idea Farhad :D ) and packed up the tent before heading out suited up in life jackets and helmets. The record-breaking snow levels contributed to extremely high and fast rapids. I was more worried about falling in the icy cold water than anything else. With names like Satan's Cesspool and Ambulance Driver, the rush of excitement before each rapid made me feel like a kid at Disneyland. Luckily, none of us fell in but one of the other boats capsized plunging all its passengers into the water! The 20-mile stretch was filled with Class II and III rapids, which was perfect for us first-timers. I think we'll be making this a yearly event 😊
