We are happy to report that we have arrived in the Southern Cone of South America... Argentina!! After an overnight flight crossing the equator, we landed in Buenos Aires around 8AM Monday morning. Despite all of the advice we´d been given, we failed to believe that we would be going to a place where it is indeed winter. It started to become more of a reality when the Argentine flight attendant was questioning Andy wearing shorts and sandals. After leaving the airport, we realized it is nothing like Wisconsin winters but it is chilly. Good thing we did bring some winter clothes... infortunadamente the shorts and sandals will be staying in our backpacks.

Upon arrival we confirmed what we had heard about Buenos Aires, that it is a very European city with its lively cafes, busy streets and Paris inspired architecture. We took a tour provided by Fullbright organization on the first day we arrived. We were able to see a lot of Buenos Aires. In the Northern part of the city there are many nice parks and also the National Cemetery with many famous graves including that of Evita Perron. (Don´t cry for me Argentina....) In the southern part of the city we saw the stadium of the famous Argentine football team, Boca. We also met all of the other US Administrators in the same Fullbright program.

At night we went to a cool restaurant called Cumana, where Andy was able to have his first sip of mate. Mate is a super green tea that is drank by everyone and is super popular in Argentina and Uruguay. Mate is more than just a tea however, it is a complete cultural event where one cup of tea is shared by everyone in your group. This tradition spans all socio-economic classes and ages.

The next day we had our orientation for the Fullbright program. We were with a group of US Administrators who are also here doing an educational exchange. After the orientation we had free time and walked around the part of the city called la madera, which is considered to be yuppie ville. We crossed the token image of BA, Puente de Las Mujeres and tried to dance the tango, with little success. At night we traded a hotel room for a seat on a double decker overnight bus which would take us 10 hours northwest to Cordoba. The overnight bus was quite luxiourious... no joke! We had seats that fully reclined into a bed, they served beverages and meals and we had our own TVs. We were happily surprised with our choice of transportation!
