Good Morning,
What an eventful two days it has been.
Monday was mainly focused around the semi-finals competition. We got an early start to our day (7:15am) and prepped up until we had to present at 2pm. Our presentation went super well, and everyone loved our song! (Pictures to come later in the week of that). We did not make it to the top 6 final round, but as the announcer said "There are winners and winners" and as our Canadian friends said "Now we can party hardy". So we celebrated with all of new friends and went to downtown Hong Kong. Wow! So many people out and about for a monday night! Several of the bars and pubs even had music, live bands, and dancing! We danced our socks off until 3am. What a remarkable time with some remarkable people. Thankfully we had some local students with us that packed us all into 5-6 cabs and told the cab driver where to go, because I never would have been able to find my way back alone!
Today(Tuesday), we stepped the pace down a bit, and learned Tai Chi. If there's one thing you should know about me
Friends Celebrating
Put with our new friends from Nigeria, Australia, UK, China, Hong Kong, Canada, and Germany. is that I am super, super, uncoordinated... sometimes. I tried Zumba once, try to imagine that. But being a drummer, I can typically handle that sort of thing better because ofthe rythymic nature of it. This on the other hand was more about grace and patience. Ha. It was surprisingly fun, elegant, and relaxing. The older Tai Chi Master's favorite phrase amoung the 'spa music' (as we would refer to it here in the States) was, "Continuing On" wait 10 seconds "Continuing On".
Then we had Dim Sum lunch on the world's largest floating restaraunt (fun!). Elizabeth and I waited for our 'cultural experience' of our vegetarian food. It was very interesting, and I like about 50% of it. The restaraunt itself had a wonderful enviroment to sit with 12 others or so around a table and toast our earthy hot tea to our friends success(good luck) in the finals!
We also visited the Hong Kong Science Park: where the start-up innovation magic happens! It's a grants run system that provides new startups with office space and some pretty awesome business services to get them launched at very very low cost to the business. They have a success
GT Team
Our Vice Provost from GT, and also one of my mentors, was there as a judge in the secondary division. This picture was taken after our presentation! rate of 77%, that is 77% of the businesses they've help get started from 16 years ago to now are still in business!
The most special part of the evening though was getting to meet fellow Techie(GT), Erica. She's currently working in one of the start-ups at the Hong Kong Science Park, and has been in Hong Kong for 3 years now! We were able to exchange GT stories and mutual acquaintances, mourn the loss of Tech traditions great Junior's Grill, get an insiders guide to shopping in Hong Kong, and treated to dinner at a most delicious indian food restraunt. What's even better, SHE LOVES KAYAKING TOO! I think she's going to hook me up with some places to rent kayaks here in Hong Kong. Spending time with Erica tonight, was truly a blessing.
Elizabeth and I hit up the shopping markets afterwards for some interesting bargaining experiences. She is a Pro!
Goodnight and God Bless,
SaraH
