My neighborhood salon! Happy Mother's Day to all of my maternal friends!! I hope you had a wonderful day!
To continue on my journey...Friday was a New York style maintenance day! I had an appointment to get my hair cut and went with some trepidation, to a little salon across the street from my apt., Michael's. My stylist was from Ecuador and did not know the word "gentle." After having my hair pulled, my scalp poked, and my face waterboarded, I emerged relatively satisfied with the results, after over three hours, and headed back to Nana to get my nails done. The most excting thing was discovering that Nana is from South Korea, so I think we had a great conversation, although her English was not so good either.
I headed over the TKTS and got tickets for what turned out to be one of my favorite non-musical plays: "Freud's Last Session." It is off-Broadway and performed at a theatre inside the Westside YMCA between Broadway and Central Park West on 63rd. I got there early and was able to walk around the neighborhood which I love to do. I have to say that the weather has been beautiful and the forecast
Letty and me!
First NY haircut experience! looks great. The play was about Freud meeting at his house with C.S. Lewis two weeks before Freud's death, to discuss religion, of which they had completely opposite views. It's based on the writings of both and the assumption that a young doctor with which Freud did meet at that time may have been Lewis. After the play, the playwright and the actors came on stage to answer questions and discuss the play. It was so interesting and I loved it!
Saturday morning I braved the early hours again to stand in line for a ticket to stand in line and hopefully get into Saturday Night Live. I didn't. I was in the line by 5:30 AM and there were about 125 people who had slept there overnight. I stood in line with a young woman from South Africa, which once again made for a great conversation and she had excellent English! She was here to study abroad exactly as Jake had been there. They started handing out numbers at 7 and I was #74 for the actual show, choosing that because the number for the dress rehearsal was at 80. I had to be back at 10:45 PM
9th Ave. at 49th St.
Border of Hell's Kitchen to stand in line again to try to actually get in. At 11:30PM, as the show started, they had taken the first 32 people and the rest of us were out of luck. Having been up since 5 I was only barely disappointed. Mostly I just felt sorry for all of the people who camped out and still didn't get in. Again I talked with some young women in New York for school from California and it was a fun time, so no regrets!
By 10:00 Saturday morning, I was ih Brooklyn with Neal and Val, having huge and wonderful donuts from Dough, for breakfast! Strange donuts like Chocolate Chipotle, Lemon Poppy Seed, Dulce de Leche, you get the idea. We shared a few, I got to see their apartment, which is very Neal and Val(!), and then we headed to the Brooklyn Flea Market. What a funky and fun collection of merchandise and food, from jewelry made from old typewriter keys to maps of every place imaginable, just lots of unique, creative, eccentric items. I completely enjoyed the morning with the Andrews, with great conversation as well, and headed back to Manhattan about noon.
I got a

I saw three wedding parties on Saturday! ticket for "Million Dollar Quartet," which is the reproduction of a night in 1956 when Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash gathered at Sun Records in Memphis, where they had all launched their careers, with owner Sam Philips, and ended up having an impromtu jam session. Unfortunately, in real time, one of the producers of this show had died and three of the four original actors, plus several of the understudies, were in LA at his Memorial. So Jerry Lee Lewis was the only original cast member and it was definitely obvious. He was amazing but overall I was disappointed with the play. Incredibly uncomfortable seat, unfriendly people around me, and the music was not my favorite. Oh well...after 19 plays, I'm getting picky maybe?
Walking from the play at 41st to NBC at 49th was NY at its best. There's just no place like Times Square on Saturday night. I had plenty of time and wandered around for about 45 minutes. There is the largest Toys R Us in the world with a ferris wheel inside of the store! And thousands of people, lights, street entertainers, barkers, you name it, you can see it
there. Earlier in the day I had seen three different wedding parties getting pictures taken and of course, ran across The Naked Cowboy! Now there is also a Naked Cowgirl but I didn't take her picture!
Sadly, I just heard that a 29 year old man was run over last night by a drunk tour bus driver at 47th and 9th, two blocks from where I live. I have to say that pedestrians have very little respect for or fear of moving vehicles which I find both rude and dangerous. I didn't really notice until I was in the only cab I've taken, trying to get to the doctor when I felt so sick that Saturday night. It was nearly impossible to get there. I'm not blaming the victim, of course, but was only reminded of that observation that I've made.
My day started with a text from Reza, my favorite son-in-law! I also got calls from my girls and I'm sure I'll hear from Jake some day! haha! I went to church at 11:15 at Trinity Church which is in the financial district, at Broadway and Wall St. and is the church to which St. Paul's is
Freud's Last Session, May 6, 2011
Westside YMCA - Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater affiliated. I went there specifically this Sunday because of the death of bin Laden, to see what might be said and to be with people so deeply affected by 9/11. It was definitely my best church experience in the city. The church of course is beautiful, as they all have been, the rector's sermon was wonderful, and the Eucharist was totally open. It was an amazing worship experience. I love the huge pipe organs in these old cathedrals and at the end of each service how, like at St. Paul's in Fayetteville, everyone just sits and listens until the organist is completely finished. It's like going to an organ concert and I love it!
I took the subway back to Grand Central and met Shelley at the train at 1:30. We went to see "Wicked," at 3, and it was wonderful; definitely one of the best plays I've seen! After the play we ate at Junior's, talking non-stop, of course! And then headed back to Magnolia Bakery for dessert to take to Jason before Shell got back on the train at 8. It was a great day with my adopted daughter, whom I love! And I just want to
say how much I love and appreciate all of my children. You really make my life worth living!
