I left the apartment at 8:30 this morning and got back about 9:30 tonight. First I went to the 9:00 service at Grace Church between Greenwich Village and the East Village, on Broadway, and for those of you who know I like the 11:00 service usually, I'll tell you why. 1.) Rite II 2.) Parish Choir (which turned out to be about six women) and 3.) a 12:00 movie. Again, it's hard to believe how well my days all seem to turn out. I haven't been late or missed any of my planned activities in spite of getting around on various subways and being totally over booked.
Once again I missed Roger's preaching, but I did recognize every song and the setting was breath taking again. I love these old cathedrals. And of course knowing that every Episcopalian in the world is saying the same words and hearing the same scriptures always just blows my mind. Still requiring baptism for the Eucharest (sorry, Jake!) but a beautiful experience just the same. We are just way too progressive in Northwest Arkansas...
After church I walked over to the theatre, and after brunch, at a place called "The Smith," on 3rd
Ave., got in a RUSH line for "Newlyweds," an Edward Burns film which was great. I was talking in the line to two young women who had been working the festival and one of them gave me a pass to get in free, so that was welcomed! One of the actresses in the movie was there for the Q and A, and referred to Burns as "Eddie," which I thought was just adorable! He actually is pretty adorable...
My next movie was at the same place at 2:30 so between them I walked through a street fair on 11th St. right by the theatre and took some pictures. I could have bought many things for Christmas stockings but didn't want to carry them around all day and I know my kids are glad to hear that! At 2:30 I saw a documentary, "New York Says Thank You," about survivors of 9/11 (firefighters, construction workers, etc.) who are part of a group that goes around the country around Sept. 11 each year to help out survivors of other disasters. The idea evolved from a 5 year old NYC boy, and his family heads up the effort. Another website you may
want to visit. Very moving...
My third movie was at 5 and was across Chelsea, so I navigated a new subway and made it in plenty of time to see "The Perfect Family," with Kathleen Turner which was also great. In 11 days I have seen 18 movies and there was not one I was sorry I went to. That was the only Q and A that I didn't stay for because I had one more event to attend...
Chris Barlow wrote an amazing play which won an award out of 200 entries, that was read at a studio at 7. It was only blocks from the last theater so I walked over, having no idea what to expect. He had explained that he was able to choose the director and help in the casting, but I have never attended a reading. It was on the 7th floor of an office building and there were about 20-25 people there to watch. The actors sat with the script on a musical stand, like you had in high school, and moved about very little, but read as if they were performing the play. One person read what you would see
on a power point if the play was actually produced and one person read what the scenes would look like. The play was the funniest, quirkiest, most clever and entertaining non-musical play that I have seen since I have been here! No kidding. I was cracking up and so was the audience...and so was Chris, upon whom I kept an eye throughout. I wanted to see if he was having as much fun as the audience, and he certainly appeared to be. I was so proud and told everyone I talked to afterward that I had known him since he was born! I also told him that he is way too skinny and needs to eat more! Am I a mother or what? This was definitely the highlight of my long day! I immediately called Rob and Roberta and Lynn to brag on their son and brother. It was very impressive and truly exciting to see. I have to say that I thought about Rob and Randy's incredibly oblique and quirky humor, and how much this reminded me of them. I also wondered how much was autobiographical and Roberta said that the mother character was somehow based on her, according
to Chris. Such a fun night and a great day overall. I will sleep well tonight! I hope you do the same!
