Kitchenette in Tribeca
Cutest little place I ate first time in Tribeca! I stayed in a while on Friday morning, not leaving the apartment until 2, but saying good morning to the doorman anyway. That's the longest I have stayed in my apt when I wasn't sleeping and I totally blame it on television and having my computer in my house! But it was nice to relax for a while.
I walked down to and around the Port Authority Bus Terminal to find a restaurant for dinner with a friend on Monday night who is coming in from PA on the bus and found the New York Times Building and the glitziest McDonald's I've ever seen on 42nd St. I decided to just take the subway to somewhere in Greenwich Village to continue to explore, (since my previous day got rained out,) until my film festival movie at 4. I got off at Christopher Street, where 42 years ago the modern gay rights movement began in a tavern there, and where the Heritage of Pride March, the largest Gay Pride march in the world ends every year. I ended up on Mott Street, another street that has an infamous history in the gay rights movement. I got a little lost using my
iPhone on driving instead of walking, ended up walking all the way over to Bowery St., also historical, of course, for boys and bums, until I switched it to walking and got back on Bleeker St. It's just amazing to me to be walking down all of these streets that I've heard about since the 70's. I ran across St. Luke's in the Field Episcopal Church, and continue to be amazed that I see more Episopal churches than any other kind up here.
The movie was "Treatment" about a guy who fakes his way into an exclusive drug treatment facitility and then becomes addicted to drugs. Pretty interesting...funny...tragic.
Took the subway home for a minute and walked back to the theater to see "Good People" with Frances McDermond and Estelle Parsons, who is 83 years old and stole the show. It's the only show I've been to where there was no standing ovation, which really surprised me as I liked it better than several others and there were such stars in it. Go figure. I sat next to a lady who warned me that she had been up since 4:30 to watch the royal wedding and might go
to sleep, which she promptly did, snoring through much of the play. On the other side of me were two women who have a horse farm in PA, and who were very funny and enjoyable to talk to.
Saturday morning I caught a 10:15 movie in Chelsea, navigating the weekend subway schedule which wasn't easy. The movie, "Dispicable Dick and Rightous Richard" was a documentary about a recovering alcoholic from South Dakota, going through steps 8 and 9, making amends to people he'd harmed while he was using. Again, interesting...funny...tragic. Do you see a theme here? I'm definitely drawn to certain genres, huh?
At 1:00 I met Stacey and Johnny for lunch at Junior's, one of their favorite places in the theatre district and on my list of cheesecake places, (not bad,) before going to see "That Championship Season," with Chris Noth, Keifer Sutherland, Jason Patric, and Jim Gaffigan, among others. I was sorry that we didn't take any pictures together! Oh well...
The play was good; again, not my favorite, but it was fun to see stars! From there the Lundquists returned to NJ and I returned to Tribeca to walk around the Family Festival before
Theater in Tribeca
Known as BMCC for Borough of Manhattan Community College, taken from the Tribeca Bridge over the West Highway my next movie at 6, in Chelsea. The festival was mostly for families but it was a beautiful day to walk around and watch all of the kids having so much fun. I walked over to West Highway and along the Hudson for part of the time which was just wonderful. And I found a pastry shop that Ginger had alerted me to from something she saw on TV. I will do a taste test later with the cheesecake and cupcake I brought home with me!
I subwayed back to Chelsea in time to see "She Monkeys," a Swedish film that won the award for Best Narrative Movie at the festival, about power, control and sexual tension among adolescent girls, kind of. Very good. The Q and A was pretty lame as the audience kept trying to make the writer/director explain the film and she kept saying that each person needed to do their own interpretation. It was her first feature film and again, she looked about 15.
So here I am back at home with another big day tomorrow! I hope this isn't getting boring for you, because it certainly isn't for me, but I could understand
if it is for you! I think of things all day long to write but forget most of them and as long as these are turning out, it's probably a good thing! I hope all is well with all of you!!
