Today would have been Randy's 60th birthday. It was a beautiful day in New York and I thought about him a lot, even more than usual. He would have loved all of these independent films, however he never would have gone to three in one day! Happy Birthday, Randy...
Today I did see three films at 10, 1, and 4, and got home early to watch American Idol on my new television! All of the movies were at the same theater which I discovered is in East Village rather than Gramercy, and which makes it way cooler, I guess! The first movie was a chilling documentary, "Give Up Tomorrow," about Paco Larranaga, who is currently serving two life sentences in Spain, for a crime, for which he was arrested in 1997, and which he apparently did not commit. For more information go to giveuptomorrow.com...extremely interesting. And...his parents, sister and sister-in-law, and the director and producer of the movie were there for questions after the film. All of the directors and producers are so young, it's amazing...like late twenties, early thirties at the most.
I walked over to a little restaurant across the street from the theatre, the Pour House,
sat at the bar and had lunch quickly before getting back for my second film, "Maria, My Love," a good film but not my favorite. I'm trending toward the docs rather than the dramas, although this was inspired by a true story. Karen Black was in the movie, and the rest of the cast was at the theater, along with the director/producer. I continue to meet the most interesting people, even in the bathrooms, who are all anxious to discuss the movies we're watching, which is fun.
After that movie I had about an hour so I walked around the East Village, came across the neighborhood Episcopal church (they're everywhere!), the Village Voice, the strange building of Cooper Union which is a small private college, and other interesting sights.
The last movie was "The Revenge of the Electric Car," a sequel to "What Happened to the Electric Car?" due to the resurgence of the electric car! Great movie, again accompanied by a couple in the movie, who design and build electric cars, and the director. And a great way to end the day. Back on the subway to come Uptown, walk to my little apartment, and actually have
media outlets! As Randy would say, what a country?
