One thing I've been meaning to say is how nice it is to be in a blue state! Like, for instance, I was tasting cheesecake at Lindy's, (who advertise that they have the best in NY... they don't) and they had MSNBC on their television. I have seen CNN and ESPN, as well, and no Fox! That's just amazing coming from AR! And...when I went to get my nails done, Nana, the nail lady had a picture of Jesus in one corner of her wall behind her station, and a picture of Obama in the other corner!! And it wasn't Obama with horns or a bone through his nose. Anyway...just nice to be with like-minded people.
So, Monday was back to Tribeca! I have seen seven movies at the festival, all of which have been good. "Semper Fi-Always Faithful" was Monday at noon, an excellent documentary about the discovery of one of the largest contaminated water sites in US history at Camp Le Jeune, primarily by the father, an ex-Marine, of a 9 year old daughter who died of leukemia. Absolutely heartbreaking. He and another man, who was born on the base and later had cancer linked to the contamination,
and who worked extensively on the investigation, were at the filming, along with the writers and directors, and they all took questions after the film. Congress actually has a bill before it now named after his daughter that will require the government to clean up the bases that are known to have contaminated water. This has been going on since the 50's.
Then I walked from that theater in Grammercy to Chelsea, ate lunch at Righteous Urban Barbeque, not bad for NY barbeque. I was going to eat at Eataly, Lowell, but it was too overwhelming! Takes up several city blocks, has about ten different eating areas, plus markets, kitchen wares, etc. I was totally intimidated! My movie at 3:30 was "Love Always, Carolyn" about the woman who was married to Neal Cassady and was the lover of his best friend, Jack Kerouac. This was probably my least favorite, at least in part because I don't know the story of these two men, but I am now motivated to learn more about them.
I tried to get into "Jesus Henry Christ" with Tony Collette, but didn't, so with time on my hands at 7:00, I decided to
go to the AMC in Midtown and see "Water for Elephants," which I also liked. The theater, on 42nd street, is about six stories high so I took some pictures from the outdoor space they had on the fifth floor. It's just crazy how big it is. They have 25 theaters!
This morning I finally got my cable and Internet in my apartment so I am actually typing this from my apartment and not from Starbucks! Around 10, I took the subway back to Gramercy for the 11:30 showing of "Last Night" a romantic drama with Kiera Knightly, and then with my next movie not until 4, I walked down to SoHo. It was in the 90's and sunny, hot but beautiful, a beautiful day to walk. I went so far south that I ended up taking the subway back up to 23rd to Chelsea, where I actually ate lunch at The Trailer Park, what a kitschy little place! It was seriously one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had and tater tots, my favorite! The theater is across the street, and I saw, Dennis Farina in "The Last Rites of Joe May," at 4. The writer/director was there
for questions after that movie as well.
Then I hopped back on the subway and came back uptown because I had tickets to "The Jersey Boys," at 7 a play I've been wanting to see for years. It did not disappoint! I, of course, grew up with Franki Valli and The Four Seasons, love their music, and their story was not what I expected, very interesting, so well done. I sat behind three women who were a show unto themselves, with their strong Jersey accents and attitudes. One of them turned around and loudly shushed the couple sitting next to me who were carrying on a conversation in a normal tone during the first of the play. They didn't say another word. But he did sing from time to time. Not a good thing to do, really, at a play. Unless the whole audience is singing...
Couple of annoying things...I fell flat on my knees in front of the theater last week, tripping on a barricade, so my knees are bruised and scraped, as well as my ego. Kneeling at church on Easter was exceptionally painful. And last week I struggled with symptoms of a urinary tract infection
until it worsened on Saturday and I ended up at a doctor's office at Duane Reade Drug Store getting a script. I felt pretty lousy but felt fine by Sunday, dragging myself out of bed to make it to church on Easter, which turned into a glorious day. Antibiotics are a great thing. The cute little inappropriate questions were just hysterical...and the answer to them all is, uh, no.
I still feel like Annette Benning's character in The American President, going to the White House for the first time, or perhaps, like Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember, particularly when I was falling, thankfully not in front of a moving vehicle...lest anyone doubt that I'm still having fun!!
