"Livin' the dream" is Jake's line, but I'm stealing it...
Tuesday I had lunch with Chris Barlow as scheduled at a place called Whym, spelled thus, "because it's New York," according to Chris. Cracked me up! We talked plays and he gave me suggestions for things to do while here. He, in fact, is having a reading of a play he wrote on May 1, so I will definitely go to that! For lunch, I had Filet Mignon sliders, go figure...
I went to see "Born Yesterday" on Tuesday night, sitting on the front row center, and getting Jim Belushi's spit all over me all night. Seriously.. But it was a great play and actually the lead actress, Nina Arianda, stole the show. It's spring break week up here so the streets are more crowded than ever but as many times as I've been here and all different times of the year, the streets just stay crowded. It's crazy!
Wednesday, Shelley and Jason came to NYU for a doctor's appointment so I met them there! She got good news about her brain but no help for the headaches so it was good news, bad news. We rode the
subway to Times Square for their first time to see it, which was fun! Showing them my city, baby! haha!! Ate lunch at Roxy's, then walked over to Rockefeller Plaza, and ended up at Magnolia Bakery for dessert. Between bakeries and cheesecake, my jeans, as Willie Nelson would say, fit a little bit tighter than they did before! We tried to imagine keeping up with four small children in that mob but decided that three on four, we could do it! So...before I leave they'll bring the kids down for a visit!
Speaking of leaving, I have extended my stay to May 21! Many of you have asked if I would ever just stay and live here and the answer is no! I love visiting and playing but wouldn't want to spoil the magic by having to work while I'm here!! And I really want to be closer to my kids, and since I'm not moving to South Korea, DFW will do it! I fully intend to giggle and smile as much when I get closer to them as I am here!
Last night was the highlight of my trip so far! Stacey and Johnny bought me tickets
to see James Taylor at Carnegie Hall and he was amazing. I was on the third row! I had never been to Carnegie Hall and the building alone is breath taking. The program was called "Roots," which was Taylor's take on the history of his music and life. Vince Gill and Amy Grant were supposed to be included, Gill for his guitar genius and Grant for her religious roots, but they were unable to make it due to a family crisis/illness...don't know, but when Taylor finally talked about it at the end, it sounded pretty serious. He did have Alison Kraus, introducing her as the best female voice in the world, and she was unbelievable, and Robert Cray, a blues artist...awesome! I've not been a big fan of Kraus until last night; she blew me away! Then during the last encore, Taylor talked about Gill and Grant's not being there and in their place, brought out Tony Bennett! I mean, Tony Bennett! The crowd went crazy and so did I!! That's when I broke all the rules and took pictures (with about 10% of the rest of the sold out crowd! Most people are rule followers!) I just can't say
how amazing it all was. I forgot to take a picture of the building; I was walking on air as I left. All through the concert I kept thinking about how much Randy would have loved this, and been so much more familiar with some of the old music and artists than I was. I don't know when I've missed him more...I guess I always thought that I'd see him again...
