On the Underground
Our first trip on London's Rail system. Very efficient Hi to all,
Sorry that it has been a while since our last update. We dont have a computer and the internet cafe will not allow you to use the CD Rom so we cant get photo's onto the site. Luckily we have met some really great people who are letting us use their computer.
So we last left you in Singapore, our last taste of heat and humidity for the next 6 months or so. We ended up having a trip to Santoza Island which was a little rushed, so I would love to try and get back their again at some point. We visited the Fort on the island that was used in WWII and even walked into the room where the British signed the surrender of their troops in that area, and from their they were all sent to Changi Prison. We also didnt get the chance to visit the war memorial, which is another thing on my 'must try to do' list. All up it was a lovely time and a huge thanks to Chris for putting up with us. After dinner at a seafood restaraunt where we had some really yummy pepper crab (It
Big Ben
Need I say More? must have been good because even I enjoyed it), it was off to the airport.
Despite the small child sitting behind me and the small child in front of me that thought the best game on a 12 1/2 hour flight was 'Kick the chair in front' and 'Move around in my seat as much as possible while the lady behind me eats' it wasnt too bad at all. Flying in over London it was still dark and we could see all the lights and people on their way to work, it was very exciting. Steve's sister Jade picked us up from the airport and we headed to her place in Acton where we were to spend the next few days sharing a house with approx 7 girls and 1 other guy..... a backpackers life......
After dropping off our gear we headed into London to open our bank accounts (that went without a hitch), get new sim cards (and a new mobile phone for me) we met with Jade and Lauren for lunch. We then headed off to see the sights, and we both stood giggling like tourists in front of Big Ben as the reality of where
we actually were started to sink in. A quick trip to Westminster Abbey and a drop by the Queens crib (Buckingham Palace) then back to Acton. The next few days were spent hanging out, doing a little shopping and the housemates doing a lot of drinking. All in all it was a great weekend and another huge thanks to the Acton crew for making us feel so welcome.
Derek Styman (Our surrogate father at Burton Latimer) picked us up bright and early Monday morning and we headed off to Burton Latimer. We dropped off all our stuff at 'The Hall' where we are living. We have a self contained section of a manor house that has been in the same family since 1760, thats right, when the family took over this house Captian Cook was on his way to discover Australia. A strange concept. The family that live in the main section (Phil, Liz and their kids Joseph and Hazel) have been fantastic and have looked after us so well, despite Liz being from New Zeland 😊
Burton itself isnt huge but has everything we need to get by, at least 8 take away stores, 4 pubs and
Day in the Park
Having an afternoon drink in Hyde Park with some of the house mates a cricket ground. Kettering is only just down the road and serves very well as our main shopping area. Beautiful and quaint in its landscape, the people that we have met here are what really makes the experience. The cricket club is very family orrientated and makes for enjoyable days and nights with some fantastic people. The kids are so polite and the parents so friendly that it would be impossible not to enjoy yourself. Only downside is that the rules on smoking indoors are a bit more relaxed here so by the end of the evening you could swear you have smoked a packet yourself. Food has been great, weather not so great although it is starting to warm up and we are starting to see a little more sunshine every couple of days.
Steve is going well at cricket, a couple of high scores and a couple of low ones. Coaching the kids is going well for him so I think everyone is happy. I have started work at a solicitors office nearby 4 days a week. It has worked out perfectly and I am enjoying it. I miss home quite a bit, but we are still
Derek Styman
Derek has been great and I am sure will feature in the travel blog in the future having so much fun here. Appart from family we have decided that we miss kebabs (they are hard to eat here) and BBQ sauce the most. I personally miss Tim Tams and Chicos. My 21st is coming up and we are having a sing along up at the club. It is shaping up to be a good night. We also head to London this weekend, so I am sure I will have more to update from there. Also next time I will make sure to include pictures of where we are staying.
Hope you are all keeping well, talk soon
Luv Liz and Steve
