The Blue group's stay is soon drawing to a close, as they leave tomorrow. It has been a very different experience, being able to watch many of the kids as an observer, unable to hear what they are seeing yet to be able to communicate with them on some level. Part of me really wishes that I could speak norwegian because it would have given me a whole new relationship with the patients, yet at the same time it was very interesting to see it from a foreigner's point of view. I have at least gotten to develop a relationship with the girl I have been assigned to, as she speaks english. Today we swam in the pool for almost 2 hours! The pool is great with her. She talks about how she hates that she doesn't have good balance (Cerebral Palsy).. and in the pool she does well, it is nice to see.
Yesterday the entire center went outside and created snow sculptures. The giant cubes of snow had been pre made on monday and had sat there for 2 days, now when I look out my window it's full of these sculptures! it was lots of fun. We also cooked up the fish that the boys caught the other day when we went ice fishing. In the afternoon yesterday they went on the climbing wall. Once again I was amazed at the opportunities they got to try things here. No matter what disability the kids had the instructors found a way to let them try the climbing wall, and for some who had previously failed at athletics, they got to taste some success! Today was a beautiful sunny outdoor day. We went to the ski hill all day. My patient and I spent most of the day sledding, which meant I occasionally had to pull her up the hill.. needless to say I was sweating like a pig hah. At the end of the day we had our daily run down of each patient, and tomorrow they go home! A week and a half seems like such a short time for these kids, and that is part of the reason I wish I could have spoken Norwegian, to see their growth in this time. I, however, have 1 more week left here at the center and it's safe to say I won't be doing too much travelling this weekend due to the daylight savings debacle.
