It was a two hour drive to the turnoff from the Panamerican Highway to Monteverde Cloudforest. And that's where the paved road ended too. Only a handful of cars passed us going down while our rental car was doing a great job going up. The road (all the roads to Monteverde are the same) was terrible. Big rocks which Hubert would try to avoid, not always succesfully though, and lots and lots of dust. Windows closed, a/c on high and up we went. The views were incredible as you can see on the pictures. It took us an hour
to arrive in Santa Helena. Our kidneys were glad we arrived at our destination because they were shaking and shaking all over the place.
After obtaining a map of the small village of Santa Helena, which is the biggest town in Monteverde area, we were able to find our way to the cabina we rented.
What a nice surprise that was. It was located in a big and beautiful garden and the sun was shining when we arrived in the early afternoon. All the cabinas had a private garden and parking space. The guy at the reception told us in spanish that our car would sleep with us next to our cabina, really cute.
Inside it was all wood, the walls and the ceiling nicely done. The kitchen was fully equiped as promised on the internet and we made ourselves some nice meals. A supermarket was in walking distance and at the cabinas they told us we could pick lettuce, cherry tomatoes and herbs from the greenhouse in the back. So we did ! very delicious, that's all we can say about it, we even picked some basil to take home with us, sshhh don't tell anyone.
While wandering around in our cabina and admiring the view we saw an agouti walking buy. They are small creatures who look like guinnea pigs on stilts. We saw them almost every day, just walking around, doing their thing, whatever that is.
Later in the afternoon when we were sitting outside we felt the coolness of the mist on our faces. It was a relief to be away from the hot beach and actually wear different clothes, like long pants and shirts with sleeves and sweaters.
Across from the cabinas was a restaurant where they served Latin infused Tapas. They were so good that we asked the people to move to Playa Samara so we could enjoy their food more often. Wow !
Fresh fish with passionfruit sauce and mango chutney, a chicken soup with smoked chicken, cheese and strips of tortillas and the best calamari's ever.
But the main reason we went all the way up the crappy road to Monteverde was, of course, the Cloudforest.
The next morning we jumped in the car and went to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve. There were a lot of cars already but once in the forest we
didn't see anybody anymore. We were glad to be wearing our fleece jackets and rain coat, what a difference. It was a wonderful hike, first we went up and up and of course we were treated with another beautiful view.
The continental divide was right up there at the summit of a hill. A sign informed us that on one side of the mountain water runs to the Pacific Ocean and on the other to the Atlantic. All the way through South America.
One minute the view was there, the next it was covered in clouds. There is a reason they call it a Cloudforest ! it was foggy too some times and windy, cool winds blowing on our cheeks, how refreshing.
We didn't see any animals, we heard lots of birds but they were way up in the trees singing their song. The climate is so different than the beach climate and therefore the vegetation is different too. The variety of plants and flowers is amazing.
After a couple of hours we were back where we started and walked to our dusty car. On the way back to our cabina we visited the Monteverde Cheese
Factory. The cheese they make is sold everywhere in Costa Rica and is very good. Being from Holland Willeke is somewhat picky about cheeses but we both decided the Cheddar is one of the best. We bought some nice cheeses and sausages which they were selling in a small cafetaria there.
We were only in Monteverde for two nights but it was a really nice visit. So we rolled down the hill over the crappy road again and went home where Shasta was waiting for us.
Enjoy the pictures and let us know what you think......
