Miami 24 Feb. +
One of the main things I hate about Miami is that, although the bus can get you around generally, it nevertheless can be a long way to go anywhere, especially if you are in a cab paying for it! The Greyhound is in a godforsaken place off a very busy thru-road virtually at the end of the airport runway in an industrial area really. Nowhere near anything! I had planned a route to get close enough on the Airport Express bus form Miami Beach a few streets N of my hotel – and got there, it was on the opposite side of the road, and then decided to take off – I think it was on time and I was 5 min. out on my timings. As I had a $5 daily bus pass decided to go as far N as I needed to on another bus, chance another bus going West, and then maybe get a cab the relatively short distance south to the Hound. Well it turned out to be a long but quite swift cab run as no buses showed up and cost me $25. As all these cabs cost cash it really depletes my cash resources when I hope to use my USD debit card for everything more than a few dollars. Even the Greyhound would not take my debit card this morning which annoyed me so it had to go on credit card. Not to mention I think I have forgotten the pin on the debit card – which you rarely need as they just swipe it and you sign.
Anyway I am now organised with a 30 day Greyhound discovery pass which runs until 26 March – even though I leave on 15 March. It was only $100 extra ($439T) to get a 30 day rather than 15 – I figure that in the last few days I will likely be rushing around somewhat so best to have it. The average 4-6 hr ride costs around $40 so I really only need to do 11 rides or so to make it worthwhile and easier in the coming 20 days.
having got that off my chest (!) I am now in Key West Fri. 25 Feb. - onwards and outta here somewhere else in Florida that is not Miami tomorrow
