A room with a view
The view gets better each time we look We had a great flight with Air India, luckily we had the extra leg room seats so we both managed to sleep for half of the flight. We arrived at HK airport on Lantau at 6:45am; it was quite cloudy and very humid. We tried to kill some time at the airport because the hotel check in time wasn’t until 2pm, so obviously being starved of junk food for the past 7 months in Goa we headed straight to McDonalds for breakfast, two meals HK$35 (£2.65), bargain!!! We decided to get the bus to Kowloon where we had booked a room for the first two nights; it takes 1 hr and costs HK$33 each, it was a nice way to kill some more time and to get our first glimpse of the city. Our hotel, The Salisbury is right next door to the Peninsular Hotel with its famous green Rolls Royce’s and overlooks Victoria Harbour and the peak. Again luck was on our side and we were allocated our room as soon as we arrived at 10am. We had decided to go a bit mad and book a full harbour view suite…….worth every penny, the room is fantastic and the view
On the way
Not quite 1st class but it'll do is probably one of the best on the whole of Kowloon.
The Salisbury is actually a
YMCA and even though at 40 Barry is no longer a “Young Man” or a Red Indian, Construction Worker etc, etc they let him in with a swift swipe of his Gold Card…..excellent value HK$1870 (£144). No wonder the
village people did a song about this place, it's
bloomin' marvellous!! We slept for a couple of hrs and then had some shopping to do. I don’t have city wear, and beach wear in HK is frowned upon so what better excuse to hit the shops around Nathan Rd. Barry came along to carry the bags and he wasn’t left out, he got some socks and hair gum - you all know how he likes to look after his bonce!!! On our trip around the shops of Nathan Road we were approached by quite a few Indians who tried the old line "come look my shop", we couldn't believe what we were hearing, it was like being transported back down to Baga Road. Anyway we are just back in the room now chillin’ with some contraband booze from the local 7 eleven (the backpacking days

HK Island from our suite at the Salisbury never leave you so if we can save a few dollars we will, esp. on alcohol). The light show on HK Island has just finished, we stood at the window ooohing and aaahhing at the lasers and strobe lights beating a path through the clouds. A fantastic sight which hopefully if we can buy ourselves a camcorder tomorrow you’ll all get to see on film. A storm is now closing in; it looks as if a natural light show is about to out do the man made one that has just finished!!!
Just to let you all know A DECENT GLASS OF RED IS SOOOOO NICE AFTER THE INDIAN CRAP THAT WE ARE FORCED TO SERVE IN SHOOTERS.
Just deciding where to eat on our first night in ‘Honkers’ don’t know whether to stick with the junk western food or plump for the age old “When in Rome” frame of mind ? I can imagine the local Cantonese will knock spots off the Jimmy Cheung (Halton Road) and River Queen (off Greenway) experience we’ve all had!!! Bev is leaning towards the Cantonese route…. I am leaning towards the… don’t really care as long as there’s lots and lots of

Great view but it doesn't beat the Beer!!! it!!! One thing is certain; wherever we go it will be in a nice enclosed taxi as it looks like the sky is emptying the equivalent body of water as the Irish sea outside our window …. Hope this Chinese hair gum is good ???
