Luxury In Transit
We had a 2am start for our journey to Kuala Lumpur on 4 hours of sleep so it was fair to say we were knackered by the time we arrived! KL is express to come through customs it took us less then 10 minutes from the time we hopped off the plane till we were standing outside the termimal, extremely relaxed compared to the NZ and Australian borders. We were picked up on arrival by a taxi organised by our B&B, the airport is 35km from the city so we wanted to stay somewhere close. As we were landing we could see forests everywhere, it wasn't until we were in the taxi that we realised they were palm trees and that the road kill in Malaysia are monkeys!
We arrived at Jawadene where Walter (an ex US marine) and his wife Janet run the B&B, it is in a gated community as it is where all the richies live. The house was amazing! We had a shower and a nap then we went out for dinner, Walter directed us to a restaurant that was a 15 min walk from the house, we ordered 4 cokes, a plain
naan, a cheese naan, tandoori chicked and a omelet thing with chicken and it cost $7 we love Asia!
We went home and hit the hay as we had to be up ar 4.30am for our flight to Hanoi.
OMG Hanoi!
Once again checking in at KL was easy and express except for when we had to board the plane, there were about 7 different flights leaving at the same time and they let all the passengers out at the same time so we were in a massive stream of people all trying to find what plane to walk to, it was complete madness, thanks to Jono we found the correct plane. 3 hours later and we landed in Hanoi! We shared a taxi into town with 2 girls from Belgium, after a 30 min ride we stopped at an intersection and the driver pointed down the street, he spoke no English and we wern't at ours or the girls destination. After some map scanning by me I figured out we were in walking distance but the girls were miles off ! Jono was about to overpay our driver, over here you agree on a price first we
agreed $8 for both of us which is $160,000 dong, he gave him $200,000 and if we didn't remind him for change he was just going to pocket it!!
After walking through the maze of streets we found our guesthouse it was too early to check in so we went to look for food! I am proud to say that I am over my fear of eating anywhere where I can see the road as our first meal in Vietnam was Pho Bo (their national food which is beef soup with noodles) and was on the street and cost $1.25!!
The streets are crazy, packed with scooters and carrying all kinds of thing, because of TET almost every scooter you see has a cherry blossom or mandarin tree on the back, I saw one scooter with a fridge on the back! The street our guesthouse is on is full of action, lots of food and soon to be food (chickens).
We are going to head to Hoan Kiem lake tonight for fireworks to welcome in TET (Vietnamese New Year)
P.S with the wifi we are unable to use facebook at this point and we are 6 hours behind NZ
and 1 hour behind Perth it will be like this for the entire trip.
