We have now spent time with the "Women At Risk" in Addis Ababa and the women in Nazaret..... wow...these women are amazing..
I don't even know how to explain this... but I will do my best...
The 4 boys on our team read the story of Jesus washing feet and instucting us to wash each others, and then one of our AMAZING translators SAMSON read it in Amharic.... and when we told the girls we wanted to allow Jesus to work through us to wash thier feet, they squeeled in nervousness and embarassment.... A lot of the women were very nervous and were resisting the idea because they said they were too "unclean" and didn't deserve to have their feet washed.....
The boys washed all 39 of these women's feet.... and it was such a beautiful picture... because these women have been treated SO HORRIBLY by men in their past, and here are 4 AMAZING men who are serving them, on their knees, loving them..... and they weren't able to speak....but walls were tumbling down...and the non-verbal conversation that was happening is indescribable.....
While the boys were washing the women's feet, my new friend Brittany (who sings like an angel) was playing the guitar and singing to Jesus.....
After the women's feet were washed, they came to us, and we did a lotion massage on their lower legs and feet, and painted their toenails.... As I sat there, totally humbled, unable to talk to the women I was massaging... I couldn't help but notice how worn her feet and nails were.... a sign of a hard life....hard work..... And I was getting chills thinking about Jesus washing MY feet..... the thought was just totally overwhelming.....
A few of the girls stood up to speak afterwards and said something like this....
"Thank you....for coming from SO far away to spend time with us... When we feel valueless, you make us feel valued. We love you, and we thank God for people like you. Thank you for coming."
Our response was "YOU brought us value, and we are NO different then they are, and we feel SO honored they allowed us to come and serve them."
Beautiful. It was a beautiful conversation for the entire group.
This whole experience was SO humbling..... and SO BEAUTIFUL.....
