We booked a 'Mini Trekking' trip to the glacier with Hielo y Aventura which included walking with crampons on the glacier itself.

The glacier was incredible to see. It sits 60m above the surface of the Lago Argentino with 110m below and is 5km wide. It's continually moving, up to 2m per day, with the middle moving slightly faster than the edges creating cracking and crevasses. While most glaciers are receding, this one is considered 'stable'.

From the walkways and platforms, you get a great view and can hear groaning and thunderous cracks as huge chunks of ice fall off into the lake. The photos don't it justice, especially to the incredible colours – amazing blue hues. The lake itself is a milky turquoise colour.

We boarded a boat that went close to the glacier and past huge icebergs. Our tour included a 1.5 hour walk on the Glacier with crampons attached to our boots, which felt very weird at first. Going downhill we were shown how to walk 'John Wayne' style. The surface is chunky, crushed ice that is about 450 years old! The water is crystal clear and we were able to fill our water bottles.

We saw amazing crevasses and waterfalls .. finishing with a glass of Famous Grouse whisky with crushed ice chipped off the glacier :o)
