Our journey began at 05:00 am, where we managed to somehow avoid outrageous extra weight and extra size baggage fees. At the gate we ran down the itinerary of the trip: It's aggressive but has a few key rest afternoons built in. I am proud to say that even with our circumnavigation of the South Island the most driving we have on any one day is 6.5 hours.
On the plane I got some 'light' reading done on “Taonga Puoro: Singing Treasures” by artisan Brian Flintoff, who we are planning to meet towards the end of our trip in Nelson. This book is rich and exhaustive. The pictures of the instruments he has created and carved are stunning! As a musician and engineer, I found every page to be filled with an "ohhh thats how it works".
Evan and I are blessed to have the wonderful relationship building and trusting experience of driving on the left side of the road, navigating, and trying our best not to be "left-seat" (a.k.a. back-seat) drivers! 😉 This trip is going to be great for us, haha.
Later we went out in New Brighton to get our frst official city soundscaping recordings
of the trip. A big thanks to Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology and their collegues for setting me up on Urban Remix to manage my soundscaping activities. This software/hardware is way cool, it takes a mobile(like a droid) and record the sound, tags the GPS coordinate, and allows me to tag the sound with other descriptors/qualifiers(city, bird, water, etc.). Later I log in and all of my sounds are displayed on a map for easy r1emixing capability! It's great!
As per Peter's glowing recommendation we got some gingerbeer to celebrate our safe arrival!
Until tomorrow's adventures,
Sarah and Evan
