How to spend a week in Carnarvon? Do everything twice with a day off in the middle!!! Are you getting the feeling that there is not much to do in Carnarvon? Well you’re pretty much on the mark! But let’s talk you through our week and see how we go…

We arrived Friday morning and after setting up camp we set off for the Tourist Information. We had a very quick look round the limited shopping facilities (WOW, Woolworths) and called it a day, not wanting to overdo it. On Saturday Debby decided we have to do the markets and buy some fresh veg and fruit. Do you know? Bet you don’t’! So we will tell you……Carnarvon produces 70% of Western Australia’s winter fruit & veg, we can only think that the people of WA don’t eat much fruit and veg in winter……expecting to find a reasonable size affair, having the choice of 2 fresh fruit & veg stalls was to say the least a little disappointing. Steve spent the afternoon watching one of the AFL Grand Finals..

Sunday. Look guys, if we carry on like this it will take you a week to read this blog, plus Sunday was a sad day for Steve because as we strolled back down the One Mile Jetty a sudden gust of wind (that’s a lie, it had been blowing a gale all day) took Steve’s favourite hat and dumped it in the sea. He was really pissed off as we had paid the princely sum of $4 each to walk the bloody thing. After a couple of hours of uncontrolled sobbing we climbed the 28 steps up the OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Commission) and then visited the harbour with all the fishing trawlers.

A pleasant day was spent north of Carnarvon at Quobbo Blowholes. This place is a little weird, it has a caravan site right on the beach - nothing weird there - but it also has over 40 old and decrepit falling down tin shacks that you can rent out (don’t ask us why you would want to!) the place looks like a South African shanty town, with aid workers (caravans) dotted amongst them, and sorry, we didn’t take a pic.

Also just north of Carnarvon is a long sandy beach (Miaboolya Beach) where we spent a few hours sunbathing on Wednesday, only to return to find Frank and Helene! Who they hell are they, we hear you ask? Well, they were our neighbours at Broome for 3 weeks! So we spent 2 very pleasant evenings in their company.

Well folks that was our exciting week in Carnarvon, we are now heading towards Kalbarri but have 3 days to kill, so a quick side trip to Monkey Mia and wild dolphin feeding is on the agenda. Speak to you all again soon from Fly West Central.
