Holy cows? We took a trip to Heiden on Saturday for the local Biedermeir festival with lots of local food, beer and crafts and many of the locals dressed in the style of the Biedermeier time period (i.e., 1815-1848). The festival celebrates the architectural style of many of the buildings in town which were all rebuilt in the Biedermeier style after a fire destroyed the town. We also visited the local museum which had a special exhibit of pictures made by intricate cuts in paper called papierschnitt.
Sunday we hiked along the Wanderweg (a series of hiking trails throughout Switzerland) to Eggskriet. From this section of the Wanderweg we we supposed to see Austria and Germany, but we only saw Austrian and German fog. Lovely anyway! A local farmer stopped me to chat (a futile endeavor since I don't speak German), but he had a good talk with Gary; his picture is attached. The fields along our hike are filled with cows and their lovely Swiss bells which ring as they eat. It is like a cow powered wind chime. Quite lovely! We caught the trusty Swiss bus in Eggskriet to spend the day with our friends in St. Gallen.

B&B with the "church with many bells" our B&B in Grub, we walk down a little path everyday through the local fields and houses to and from the bus to St. Gallen. Its about a 1/2 mile. It's like walking through a postcard. There is a beautiful little brook with icy clear water at the bottom of the first hill and flowers and lovely vegetable gardens by every house. My legs are still adjusting to the hills, but they don't bother the sheep and goats, chickens, rabbits cows etc. There are cows with big Swiss cow bells just out the B&B's back door and a church just next door that rings bells every 15 minutes and for 5 minutes solid at 6am Mon through Friday. No rest for the wicked who want to sleep! I don't hear them anymore, but the first night was bad. This is my first introduction to a typical European breakfast of muesli, yogurt, delicious breads, cheese, smoked meats and coffee creme (I'm in heaven). I know I am in Switzerland, but the kitchen at the B&B where we eat breakfast looks just like Andre's; the chairs, the wood everything. The proprietor's name is even Heidi.
I finally got a plug to
On the Bodensee
Castle at Meersburg fit the computer as we left St. Gallen (my trusty kit did not include a 3 pronged plug). So now I have power, but our hotel in Poschiavo does not have internet access. I am parked in little cafe with the only access in town, as far as I can see. Since it is pouring rain today, I have a day to catch up on the blog now that the computer is charged. Many wet tourists are taking refuge here too, but I seem to be the only blogger (a truely amazing fact since I am a technology luddite back home).
Love to everyone back home,
Mary and Gary
