Hello!

Arrived in Vientiane today, finally, after what felt like the longest trip ever. 11.5 hours to Bangkok, then 5 hours waiting around there, attempting to sleep in a cafe, followed by another hour to Laos. And we didn't sleep at all on the planes. So very tired!

Vientiane is smaller and quieter than I expected, considering it's a capital city, from what I can tell. It seems quite laid back though, and the people are friendly. We slept for a couple of hours, then walked up to the night market which was fairly unimpressive other than the sight of weird lumps of undefinable meat. Had dinner at a cute little place - beef (I hope!) steak with some sort of Laos tomato sauce (spicy!) and sticky rice. Very yummy and only roughly 2 pounds forty! And Laos beer, yum.

Our hotel's overlooking the Mekong (our room, however, overlooks a bit of roof). The Mekong doesn't look very attractive from here - lots of building work going on, it seems.

The weather is, as expected - hot and humid. As we landed there was clear evidence of the rainy season, with some flooded fields.

I forgot the wire to link my camera to the USB port, so unless we find any camera shops, I won't be able to upload photos.

Tomorrow we're leaving early-ish to see if we can get the bus up to Vang Vien.

"...undefinable meat"
Rachelliniioffskinini, Andrea and Jessikni here! After doing some research and speaking to our friends (all of whom have been to Laos) we can confirm that the 'undefinable meat' is, in fact, definable. Turns out it's gymnures, a local staple, also known as con nhím (well, in Vietnam). Texture and taste just like beef! Take a look on Google images - they're rather sweet. Other rumours have it, this meat is actually Pygmy Marmoset – but we like to think these are vicious lies! We're looking forward to reading your next blog about your stay in Vang Vien. We're currently in Stockholm and have found you a present - but we still have to buy it though. Bidding you farewell, from Stockholm X
