Pre-game
Before the sweat lodge starts Day 5 - DT Ladies 1, Mombacho Volcano Nill - We conquered
Day 5 started early with breakfast that we had to cook, but did not have to clean up. Bonus. We got dressed in our DT uniforms. Our guide and driver picked us up at the house at 8:30 and we were off to Mombacho Volcano about 1 hour away. We got a lot of info on the agriculture and history of the area on the way from our guide Roberto, who looks 10 but is a mature 21. By the end of the ride he realized he was going to have his hands full. We transferred from the nice A/C van to a German Mercedes, circa 1046 troop transport truck. We headed up a very steep road and think the transmission was left about half way up. The volcano is covered with coffee plantations. Half way up they stopped for everyone to get some free coffee. Most of us are not coffee drinkers and those who are do not want it in their system before a 4 hour hike. So we stayed in the truck and were entertained by 2 fornicating stray dogs (Thompson girls, ask your dad what
Really steep
and slippery that means). It’s like a train wreck we just couldn’t look away. We finally reach the top and meet our guide for the walk. Vince tries to give us some history, but Kirsten is having none of that with her awesome totally funny comments (guess who is writing this blog). We pick the 4KM, 4 hour trek on the Puma Trail. Chester is disappointed it is not the cougar trail. Vince quickly realizes we're not your average tour group. We are funnier than all of them combined (at least we think we are).
The trek started out to be an adventure and was quite slippery. The award for the most falls goes to Tracey with a high degree of difficulty. The bridges did not like her. Chester takes the silver. The rain forest was breathtaking and everyone loved it. The clouds did get in our way at some of the viewing points. It felt like Jane Goodall’s “Nebraskans in the Mist.” Three hours and seven minutes later (Victory as it did not take us four hours) we emerged singing the “Rocky” theme song at the top station. The other Nica guides pretty much thought we were freaks as we
Miserable
Check out the faces. This is not what we planned on. sang. Vince was glad it was over we’re sure. He did comment that Kirsten had a comment for everything and always had something to say. This brought tears to the eyes of everyone. We were not on the attractive side at the end as the sweat was in every crack and crevice and in some places we didn’t even know we had.
Just as we go inside to each lunch a torrential down pour begins (duh it’s the rainy season). Next on the agenda after lunch (ham and cheese again) was the zip lines. We ventured half way down the volcano and got outfitted for the adventure. We had to drop a soldier at this point due to pre-existing medical conditions (Amy has stitches). There is not much on the signing away of liability in Nica. They just give you 5 min of instructions and you are off. We had 3 zipline virgins (Tracey, Jenn and Maija) who took to it like it was white on rice. We had a great time with the inappropriate comments to the guides, but most were missed by them. The final zip was a freefall off the platform. We did get to see
The path down
A slipery one some monkeys at the end of the zipline which made for the end to a great day. We had an hour drive home but stopped to get some wine and pizza to be delivered to the house.
Trying to be the prefect wives and mothers we all know we are, everyone tried to call their families at home and on mobiles to tell them not to worry, everything is great. However not a single person answered after trying numerous different lines. Guess they don’t miss us too much.
So as we write this blog on a Friday night, 2 are in the pool (Jenn and Maija), 3 are drinking wine to help relieve our sore muscles which are only going to be worse in a few days. Good thing we have massages scheduled for Sunday.
Tomorrow surfing and Tortugas.
