Hi there,
Hope that everyone is having a good summer!
We have been doing a lot of driving, the last time I wrote we were heading off to Pula. Pula was awesome. The coliseum was out of this world. To think that the place that we were standing on was once a place where gladiators fought and there were thousands of spectators watching!
This month there is a film festive inside the walls of the coliseum so there was a giant screen set up. We did not see anyone famous, that is we did not see anyone that we recognized. Who knows maybe we did!
We have also drive to the birth place of Nikola Tesla, which Nick was excited about. On that same trip we stopped by this old castle, I think that this one was one of the better ones that we have seen. I am sorry but, I am not sure where this one was.
Driving around you get to see how different the country side is in this country. One minute you are driving down a beautiful coast with its’ cliffs one once side and the rocky mountains on the other. Then
you turn and drive a kilometre into the mountains and you are in a old pine forest, take a right turn and the next thing you know are in a valley with its’ farms that go on for miles.
To day we drove back to the island of Krk, which is just across the bridge that is by our hotel. We all like the walled city in Krk and then we were going to go swimming there, but changed our minds. We ended up going to a cave that was only 110 meters long, but was very interesting with the things grow from the ceiling. From there we went to this beach, but it was very different, it was not sand or rock but dried mud, and there were these mud holes that people were rolling around in getting all muddy.
The people would then either laid down and let the mud dry on their body’s or go into the sea to get washed off. Of course Marcus and Hannah had to try this out! I think that they enjoyed it.
Tomorrow we are going to Nick’s second cousin’s house up in the mountains, it is about
a 45 minute drive, it will be a nice because we will get to meet Vesna’s daughter and husband as well.
The weather has been cloudy and cooler than when we first arrived, which makes it nice for driving around and looking at castles and the like.
Our days here in Croatia are soon over and then it is off to Rome. First we will take a ferry down the coast and then take a right and over to Italy. The ferry that we will be travelling on is called the Marco Polo, and it about the size of the Queen of Prince Rupert. Nick’s second cousin Victor use to be the mate on this ship.
I will write again before we leave Croatia. Take care and I hope that everyone is in good sprits and health!
