Having Boarded a sleeper bus in Chiang Mai we were now headed for Bangkok again (joy!) on our way to the Islands in the south of Thailand. The journey took a roughly 12 hours after the usual delay in leaving and general hanging around.

In Bangkok we managed to meet up with Ashley, Laura's brother who had been on a lads holiday to the Islands, mainly spent in Koh Phangan - our first destination. We had a day to spend in Bangkok before we boarded another night bus followed by a boat to Koh Phangan. We both went with Ashley and two of his friends to the Bangkok weekened market, so big it has its own map. The size was incredible, along with the amount of crap. This was truely my sisters idea of heaven, one giant 'carboot' sale! Perhapes crap is a little harsh, clothes galor and even a pets section made for hours or two days if you could handle it of treasure hunting.

The bus to from Bangkok to Koh Phangan was very comfortable in comparison to those we used in Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam. Well air conditioned with almost fully reclining seats and even a TV showing films in English! However, we did miss the world cup final - much to Laura's disappointment!

This trip was a long one, 12 hours on the bus followed by a 2 hour stop off before finally getting on the boat to the islands. The bus stint might not have taken 12 hours if it weren't for the 'stop off' half way through to cram cuddly toys and beach balls into every spare nook and cranny on the bus, typical thailand.

We checked into our beach bungalow and headed for the beach desparate for a swim, sadly we did not realise the tide on this island went out about a mile over a coral reef making swimming impossible until about midnight - the pool had to do. We are spending only two nights on Koh Phangan, the island made famous for its 'full moon parties' that draw up to 30,000 tourists in high season to get absolutely wrecked - this we avoided like the plague. The island was nice but prices to get around were extortionate so we stayed mainly around our bungalow beach. A night market nearby offered fantastic food for bargain prices, which was a nice relief from much of the silence and prices in the local restaurants.
