Hey I’m in Japan!! I know it’s kind of a dick move, but I’m not really sure where to start. This last week has been so incredibly busy, I’ve hardly had time to take a piss. Right now I’m in Makuhari New City in the Chiba prefecture outside of Tokyo. It’s about a half-hour train ride outside of downtown. It’s weird, because Makurhari is a Toyko suburb, but there are still like 1.5M people and skyscrapers everywhere and all that. It’s nuts.

So far, I think the most memorable occasion has been taking the train into Ginza and hitting up an Okonomiyaki restaurant with everyone in the IES group. I think the thing I like most about Tokyo so far is that you can be in a place like Ginza, going into places like Louis Vuitton and Tiffany’s, and be drinking cheap Japanese tall boys out of a plastic bag. Nobody bats an eye. Well, maybe a little since we’re all foreigners.

My host family situation is pretty sweet. I’m staying with a family called Makinodan-san. They live in Yatsu which is about a 30 minute commute from campus. It’s a total traditional suburb like you see in anime or Beat Takeshi films. The family is actually pretty loaded! I have a huge room with a skylight and my own balcony. Their car has a frikkin TV in the dash! The whole house is pretty Western style, other than the fact that nobody really speaks English.

Sometimes I honestly feel like a Japanese school girl. I ride the train to school, constantly play with my cell phone and buy candy out of vending machines like nobody’s business. Speaking of cell phones, my cell phone can pretty much beat up anyone’s cell phone. And take video footage of said beating. And translate English into Japanese. And then email the video to your mom. It’s called the “Sweets Pure.” That’s honestly the name for it.

I’m not really sure what else to write right now. I’m still super busy and still kinda jet lagged---even after 5 days. Hope all is well in the States. Love.
