BAR IN RUSTENBURG
Today the "Barmy Army" that's what the SA media are callling us, hit Rustenburg. After driving around town
for a good 45 minutes, and it's only a one main street town, Dumb and Dumber finally stopped at the first bar ,with English supporters, that we passed a life time ago.
The drink in the bar was oh so cheap, that's taking into account the World Cup hike in price as well. A half pint of wine and a pint of ice cold beer cost less than £3.00 whee heeee.
We hooked up with two young lads who we will describe as legends. Nick (from England) and Raphael ( from Spain )These two adventurers arrived in SA without tickets or accommodation. They have managed to attend the opening ceremony, the first match between Sa and Mexico and now the England game. They took the local bus from Jo'Burg to Rustenburg, with all the locals, but had no transport back. Roger and I offered them a lift back to Centurion ,where we are staying, 40 minutes outside Jo'Burg if they can't get anything else. We arranged to text after the match.
We stayed with Nick and Rafael on our journey from Rustenburg to the ground..We were all concerned that we would never get to the designated "Park and Ride" after going through some of the shadier areas of Rustenburg. Still we got there in one piece and ended up on a transport bus full of USA supporters. Fun was had.
At the ground a beer garden had been set up for the supporters. What an atmosphere. English and Americans were inter mingled and we had a ball. If you could bottle the good will, amazing atmosphere and general feeling of happiness you would be a millyonaire, in the words of Del Boy.
Inside the ground there were so many Englans supporters it could almost have been classified as a home match. The England Band were there, in fine form as always.
The Match was so disappointing. Afte putting us on a high with an early goal we just lost our way. We were all asking the question why Heskey was on the plane. He injured Rio and missed an open goal. I really cannot put into words about the USA goal. It has been said why aren't the Team putting in as much effort as the supporters have to watch them. A fair comment.
We never heard from the Legends after the game so hope they got a lift back to Jo'Burg.
