Today turned out to be a full 24 hours worth of adventures. After waking up at 3 am to complete a hike that was not as strenuous as expected we returned to our humble resting place at around 11 am. Taking time to eat and determine a rough plan for the day and weekend we soon headed into the city to buy our tickets for the Burj Khalifa. After a quick purchase of tickets we sauntered around the mall and eventually went to the Souk al Bahar, translated as "Outdoor Market" if my failing memory serves me right. Our treks between places were quick and with much haste as to prevent rivers across our face.
To fufill my desires to be a tourist and see all that I could see in Dubai, Kabir drove us to Atlantis located on the Palm Islands, where we watched the opening ceremony of the World Cup. I couldn't help supress the widest smile on my face as I watched the opening ceremonies, knowing that within a week I too would be in those stadiums with all those futbol frenzied fans. My excitement soon turned into exhaustion as the opening ceremonies finished and I found
Atlantis
Seating outside on the beach where you could smoke sheisha and enjoy the beach myself with a rounded belly and cheese on my napkin from the recently piled high nachos that were placed before us.
I was not able to take many pictures, much to my stupidity since I forgot to pull my sd card out of the computer and bring it with me. That realization ended in a sharp slap to the head after a momentary embarrrased head shake.
Deciding that Atlantis would be too expensive to continue our world cup viewing we quickly shifted our location to another part of Dubai, the Dubai Marina, where we found an outdoor tent enclosed with air conditioning and sheishas. As we excitedly chose the closest table to the projector screen we smoked the ever so freindly taste of mint ready to watch the first game of the 2010 World Cup. However, our excitement for the opening S. Africa vs. Mexico match was soon replaced by frustration as the Dubai network JBC failed to produce a proper transmission. From the first half we only saw ~10 minutes. The other 35 minutes were filled with groans and moans of disappointment and frustration as the screen turned black with the now ever so familiar and angering note
Atlantis
Seating outisde on the beach "Signal Error" and "Searching for Signal. " We we only able to watch the game in short 30 second intervals of transmission.
In utter frustration we left the Marina and headed home in the thought that we'd take a nap and hopefully catch the France vs Uruguay game at a better location with hopefully better network coverage. However, when we reached home Kabir's dad had fixed their TV and found that he was able to get coverage. The rest of the S. Africa/Mexico game was exciting and I found myself hoping Bufana Bufana would pull through.
After the match we went out for dinner at Barbeque Delights, a local kebab place here in Dubai. The kebabs were amazing, especially the chicken kebab. When i took a bite it was like an explosion of lemon, spice, meat and deliciousness in my mouth. The dal reminded me of my own home as I devoured everything put in front of me using my fingers and naan to clean my plate.
The rest of the evening was quite relaxed. We went to a boathouse club (one of kabir's friends was a member) and watched the very dissapointing France vs. Uruguay Game. After being awake for such a long time and after watching an unexciting game, we didn't have any more energy to continue or pursue further adventures and thus called it a night as we both dozed in and out on the cab ride home.
