Walkin to work...Walkin to work...Walkin to work...

Sometimes it looks crooked like this - depends on how early I'm going in.
Well, 33 has always been one of my favorite numbers. For those of you who believe in Numerology (and I know that narrows it down to just me), 33 is actually my number, aligning me, I've been told, with some sort of "higher vibration." Yeah, well, anyway, like I was saying - 33 is not a bad number. A 33-karat ring? Hot damn! Okay! 33 dollars? Certainly not a fortune, but a gal can buy at least two good pizzas with that. A 33 gun salute? Only if they're all pointing away from me.

But 33 days until I leave, finally and for the first time, to Europe! Christ. I'm not going to make it. I sit in my apartment in Brooklyn, amidst heaps of poorly organized school work that I should be tending to this very minute - and all I can do is day dream. I have maps taped to all the walls, paths drawn, itineraries noted. Travel guides lay strewn, fluttering with sticky notes drawing my attention away from Bourdieu or the history of Medieval Jewry to the humid depths of some Turkish cistern...

But BACK TO WORK! for me. Before I go, I will leave you with my current plan for my travels. Some of you might be merely amused, others might be making plans to come meet me (you know who you are), and some of you nervous motherly types might just need something concrete to stare at.

May 4- Depart JFK
May 5- Arrive into Paris at the crack of dawn.
May 6- Eat one of everything in the city. Purge (not in the Mary Kate way, but more in the Roman, must-make-room-for-more, tradition). Go back for more.
May 7- Train from Paris, through Cologne, Munich, Ljubljana, and into Riejka, Croatia
May 8- Arrive into Riejka, hang out for a few hours, and hop on the boat down the Adriatic to Hvar.
May 9- Arrive into Hvar.
May 10- Play. Eat much fish. Frolick in lavender fields.
May 11- Hop back on the boat and putter down to Dubrovnik.
May 12- Bop about the marble streets. Maybe learn me some backgammon.
May 13- Okay, this is the part where the plans start to get foggy. If my posts stop about this time, give it a few days (especially you, Mom), and then call the embassy. My plan is to take a bus from Dubrovnik to Bar, a coastal town in Montenegro. I'll then stuff myself onto a train and head up to Belgrade.
May 14- Arrive into Belgrade and run directly onto another train to Istanbul. No time to waste! There's grilled meat to be had!
May 15- Arrive into Istanbul. Finally! After I stop crying, I suppose I'll probably make my way to the hostel, unpack, and find my way to my first kebab.
May 16- How cold is the water in the Bosphorous? Well, there's only one way to find out!
May 17- What's down that alley? There's only one way to find out....
May 18- Sorry, can't talk now... mouth full of fish sandwich...
May 19- Perhaps this is the day I'll be bed ridden with food poisoning.
May 20- Fifteen cents for that four-pound bag of saffron?! Naw. I'll give you six, not a penny more.
May 21- This is the day I'm supposed to return, but we'll just see about that, won't we? Tell ya what, if I can extract myself from my roof top view, if I decide I can live without the yogurt, and if George W. doesn't surprise us with any more wretched tricks from his bottomless bag of unfettered evil while I'm away, perhaps I will get on that plane. Otherwise, I'll keep you posted with my new address.

Ha!
I love that! Thanks Casey! Did you know that a fishmonger is someone who sells fish? Okay, so that makes "mong" a verb, just like "fetter." To fetter, by the way, is to restrain, or tether. And, well, George W.'s special little brand of evil is anything but restrained.
