Bread Anyone?
Cute roadside bread outlet at Colton. So life out here is all milk and Honey? Yeah sure! We cancelled our trip to Ceduna today due to high wind and heavy rain. That means a fifth night in beautiful Streaky Bay though but that’s not a bad outcome as we like the place.
We are on an absolute water front site and for four days the weather has been beautiful. Sunny, no wind and pleasant temperatures in the early twenties. Then last night up came the gale force winds and it blew all night. The van was rocking and rolling and the occupants were full of trepidation. The rain kicked in and we knew that today would be a lay day.
As the photos show, Rhonda is back on her bike and riding like a pro. In fact, it is enjoyable riding around locally on the bikes.
Colton
On our way from Elliston we came across a self serve bakery so we pulled in to see what it was all about. It’s quite simple, you choose your bread, buns or rolls and then put the $3.50 per parcel in to the petty cash tin provided. It is quite
Let's Seal a deal
Had to do some work to show the seals close up. Computer work that is! amazing because it is obviously made at the farm behind and is professionally bagged. Needless to say we hopped in for some of the goodies.
We have done a number of touring trips from here as well:
Point Labatt
About 60 klm out of Streaky Bay there is a permanent colony of more than 50 Sea lions and a vantage point to see them from. The viewing platform would be about 50 meters above them and looking down on a very picturesque rock formation at sea level. The coastal outcrops there look sensational as well.
Murphy’s Haystacks
On the round trip to the seals you can also visit Murphy’s haystacks. They are on private land just off the main highway and there is an honesty box at the entrance. There is a path that meanders around dozens of rock structures left behind from soil erosion over thousands of years. Some of the formations look just like the old haystacks we used to see. Well worth the visit.
Hally’s Beach
On another tourist circuit in the area does various visits to bays, beaches and other
Haystacks?
Rock formations. Part of Murphy's Haystacks. places of interest in the Cape Bauer region. One of those is Hally’s Beach and the interesting things there are Whistling Rocks and a Blowhole. Unfortunately the sea was too calm and so we didn’t see the blowhole in operation but the ocean was still able to set the whistling going in the rocks as the waves rolled in. Very interesting.
Mouse Plague
When we arrived at Elliston, we began to hear stories of a mouse plague in Streaky Bay. A bit of a worry! Later, as we were driving around, there was a report on the ABC to the effect that not only was there a problem in Streaky Bay but they are rampant in WA, SA and Victoria at the same time for the first time in decades. We chose to take our chances and have set up camp in a way that it is hard for them to get in . We have seen them around but no problems to date. We will probably strike them around grain growing areas so we are alert to it. Just another challenge!
Well, our next port of call is Ceduna
Dune Flora
The dunes support some colourful flora. and then we head off across the Nullarbor Plains. Should be interesting. We’ll keep you posted.
