Ok! So monday was an eventful day with a lot of walking around Lima. The first thing we did was go to Huaca Pucllana, which was a giant church of the indigenas people of Lima. It was made with adobito bricks, which are small bricks made from adobe, or a primative form of cement made from a combination of clay, water, dirt, and ground up rocks. The name means "a place for ritual games" and is derived from a combination of Quecha (the language of the indigenous Peruvians) and Spanish. It was amazing how bricks made from a combination of such loose materials could hold together under the weight of three stories of building. An interesting story about this place that the tour guide told us was that 30 years ago no one knew the ruins of the church were there....it was a giant hill of dirt and clay that many of the kids from Lima would play soccer on. It's crazy how such amazing history could be right underneath our feet and we never know it. After leaving Huaca Pucllana we went to Larco Mar, the beach in the Miraflores district of Lima. In Larco Mar we had helado (ice cream) and walked around on the streets of the area. For dinner we went to a restaurant called Junius, which is a buffet of traditional Peruvian food. There was also a show where dancers danced traditional dances from all over Peru. It was really fun, and I had my first pisco sour during the show. A very strong drink made with tequila and sour mix and has egg whites on the top. It was strong but was pretty good. After that show and dinner I went with a group of people to a local bar called El Tayta (el tie-tuh), which is the Quechua word for father. I tried a Cusqueña, the premium beer of Peru and that pretty much wrapped up my day.
