I love Muriwai - so close to Auckland and such a lovely drive to a stunning beach. It is approximately 17km West of Kumeu, 42 kilometres Northwest of Auckland city, at the southern end of an unbroken 50 kilometre stretch of beach which extends up the Tasman Sea coast to the mouth of the Kaipara Harbour. One of several popular beaches in the area (others include Piha and Karekare).

This was the first time I've been to Muriwai to find no Gannets!! All the other times I have been to Muriwai there have been Gannets galore, I suppose like most people I tend to hibernate as soon as the weather gets a wee bit chilly. Here I was thinking they were a permanent fixture at Muriwai. Turns out the best time to visit the gannets is between October in February. The chicks hatch in November then leave for Australia at 15 weeks old.

But we still had fun - the waves were so big and strong, its really a surfers paradise, some fisherman about turning to catch some dinner and the rest just enjoying a good day out walking around the cliffs and beach.

I had wanted to go today just to try out some new photographic techniques and was hoping to stay till dusk. The weather was a bit chilly and Mum & Bals were freezing so we headed home late afternoon.

Here are some of the pictures I took today - much better than the one I took last time I was there. Mission successful.
