Something old, something new

Something borrowed, something blue

And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

I'm getting married today ...

Here's a photo of my five things for good luck. Tradition has it if I carry all of these items on my wedding day, our marriage will be happy.

My "something old," the pearl purse, links me with my mother and my grandmother. Mom's name was "Pearl" and the purse belonged to her in the 1960s. I have decorated it with 4 pearls from an old, broken strand of pearls that had belonged to my Grandmother Ennis, along with some "bling" to match my wedding jewelry.

My "something new" is everything else I'm wearing and represents optimism and hope for the future.

My "something borrowed" is the garter from my dear sister, Ann (who made it clear she wants it back!!). The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

And my "something blue" are the little blue-edged wedding bells on the garter. "Marry in blue, lover be true."

I had a sixpence! I think my Uncle "Sally" brought back some European coins at the end of his tour in WWII. I've had the sixpence for probably over 50 years. It used to sit with other foreign coins in a cedar jewelry box in my Grandfather Ennis's bedroom (he was Uncle Sally's oldest brother). I guess I'll have to tape this coin in my shoe since I'm wearing sandals! This item (according to Wikipedia) represents wealth and financial security and may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck.

On May 3, eight years ago, I said "yes" to a first date with Rob. On May 1, two years ago, I was in the hospital being scanned from head to toe for cancer. Life is full of twists and turns, but if you let Him, God will weave all these events together, some initially seeming insignificant, to get to where He wants us to be. I know that Rob and I are where we are supposed to be today. Rob is the love of my life; we make life an adventure. We will be married this afternoon at 5:30 in the garden of the hotel under the bougainvillea flowers hanging over the Maile Tower Gazebo. Then we will walk down to the beach for some photographs at sunset. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it won't cloud up! We've had some rain this week.

This evening we will take our wedding officiant and his wife, Cousin Sandy & Lucille Santiago, to a celebration and thank-you dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which is just next door. So I guess I better get off of the computer and go get ready!! :-)

You've got me in (happy) tears, sis -- I'm SO very happy for you both! Mom's purse looks very pretty and I know you will rival the Hawaiian sunset in your beauty tonight.
