Nice Ride!Nice Ride!Nice Ride!

Think this is Doug's car. Loving it!
Distance Traveled: 307 mi
Towns from today: San Diego, Jacumba, and El Centro, CA; Yuma, Sentinel, and Gila Bend, AZ

Slept late this morning and went for a run in San Diego Harbor. Lots of folks out there, and the weather was great. San Diego is really nice and we would definitely come back. After we checked out of the Hilton, we headed down to Old Town San Diego, which is considered to be the first place people settled in Cali. We have vowed not to talk about food on this trip, but I have to say breakfast was MONEY! We ate at Cafe Coyote, which is a Mexican restaurant and it had some freaking awesome omelettes (carne asada), awesome guac, and unprecedented flour tortillas made right there from scratch. We took a pic of one of the ladies making them.

Next we started our trip - took a pic by mile zero on Historic California Hwy 80 in the midst of some cycling race that was going on this morning. We won't bore you with every little thing that went down as we drove, but the most interesting experiences were: we drove for miles alongside the fence of

the border to Mexico. We were stopped by border patrol. They asked if we were U.S. citizens and then asked where we were going. When we told them Gila Bend, they said, you kids have fun, there's LOTS to do there (clearly they were being sarcastic). As we drove, we found ourselves on parts of Hwy 80 that evidently are no longer in use by anyone. We had to stop twice to make sure we didn't have flat tires, and there were bushes growing in through the cracks in the middle of the road. Once Nick had nature call and it was the perfect place to stop. Another time, the bridge was completely out and we had to take a detour through a dried up creek because the bridge was out. Alternatively, there are parts of Hwy 80 that pretty much are now full-on interstate, and the speed limit was 75 mph (we've never seen above 70 back home, so this was pretty cool.)

Ah...Gila Bend, AZ: 1800 people living in this town, and we don't know why....

the accomodations, probably because the whole experience is just legendary. We went and ate at probably the only restaurant in town, a little Italian joint across the street from the motel (yes, Motel). The restaurant's website claims the owners are from Sicily and it's the best Italian eatery in all of Arizona. There is a junk yard out back. Why did we vow not to go to any chain restaurants? Nick's meal was priceless: it was lasagna and a layer of it had deli meat in it. Yes, ham. Ham cold cuts cooked into some lasagna. Nice.

Well, the train just passed the motel so I guess it's bed time. Maybe there will be more trains blessing us with their presence throughout the night. Oh yeah, and the room comes with a blue plastic fly swatter. I hope we don't end up on an episode of CSI.

More pictures to come.
